SCORM’s premise, not what it can or cannot do, was its huge premise of interoperability—far more so than AICC. The idea was that you have content in SCORM and add it to your learning system that accepts SCORM, and tada, it works without any problems or issues. In the late 80s, AICC, the predecessor to SCORM, was born.

The same can be said for Enterprise Learning Systems. Anyone can mention they are Enterprise, and that their learning system is for “Enterprises”, but finding the best of the best of those, isn’t so simple to quantify, let alone clarify. Employees will use whatever learning system you give them.

So I researched but quickly got lost in the minutia of details and acronyms -- AICC, CMI, SCO, XML, ECMAScript, manifest, packaging, and API. I remember the first time I heard the term SCORM.

I found that if people knew the trainer was an employee, the scores tended to be higher – due to the fear that the person would be fired if the scores were low. They weren’t the first person who said that to me, it is very common to hear it from other learning system execs, CEOs even, founders too, salespeople equally so.

In the training world, we were introduced to SCORM from an initiative that arose in 1999, led by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). what score they got (if there was a test), how long they spent in the course, and what answers they picked for the individual test questions.

There are different levels of SCORM compliance, as some LMS can only read and deliver the course but do not track attendance, scores or save the learner’s progress.
