Coaching Expert Kirkpatrick Learning Theory

I have included Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation in every proposal I have ever written, and I wanted to hear from Kirkpatrick himself regarding his take on the current state of evaluation and whether his four levels are still viable. Well, based on where Kirkpatrick and his son James are today, I was completely wrong.

And as time has gone by, I have started to wonder about the validity of Kirkpatrick in today’s world. Company executives are typically interested in the bottom line, not how well their employees apply the learning from a training class. What I liked was that McGoldrick didn’t critique the Kirkpatrick model. But it wasn’t.

Blended learning may be a newer phenomenon in the corporate world, but coaches have been using a mixture of video, instructor-led, experiential and peer-to-peer learning for decades. After a game is complete, the coach will break down the film, showing players what they did right and wrong. Properly d. Properly d.

Companies like Hubspot (love them, by the way) that market themselves as “social media” or “inbound marketing” experts do have some great ideas on how to leverage social tools to increase traffic, sales leads, etc. But, in the end, they’re just ideas. Because video is, apparently, a perfect manifestation of social learning theory. My learning philosophy: dont make people tote around loads of information in their heads just so you can say you trained them. But why is video so much more effective at accelerating innovation than, say, print – or even eLearning?
