They are similar to what you see in your standard LMS, course content, learning paths, reporting – but it is not as robust (which is fine for some end users). I shot off the usual reasons, the benefits, the gains and then found myself expanding into the next possibilities of where a system and content authoring tool had to go. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. Even with slideshare, you can actually post e-books and other documents, so it follows suit in a system.

Your end users make up that mass, and a statement I hear often is that people aren’t staying in the systems to fully benefit from it. The best system for the education market is Moodle. Moodle can be a worthwhile system but it requires heavy customization, dedicated IT person who has Moodle skill sets (ideal), in-house support (because when end users can’t figure it out – they will come calling YOU) and costs that many folks fail to realize.

That said, why is this happening: A significant (over 90%) of vendors are holding off this year and at least part of next year from optimizing their solution to the iPad. While I cannot say who they are, there are a couple LMS vendors that are ripe for acquisition, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see them in new hands by Q2 2011.

The ones who may not are those who identify themselves as “Training mgt systems and alike” – because they are really focused on the course authoring tool and are not a LMS in the true sense of the word. I’m glad to report that Litmos, a Lite LMS vendor, has dropped any additional cost for more storage, if you go over your included storage.
