Informal Learning and Learning Management Systems

Tony Karrer

Saw an interesting post by Dennis Coxe - Sailing by the Sound: What Informal Learning Means To Me where he points out the conflict today between learning management systems and content access / informal learning: But what really struck me is that from what I have read is that the real rebellion against formal training versus what is called "informal training" is the slavish devotion to learning management systems.

A Short Experiment: Six Word Lesson Plans

The Learning Circuits

I don't know how many of you have seen it, but over at WIRED , they did an article in which they asked a series of writers to follow in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway and write an entire story in just six words. Hemingway wrote "For sale: baby shoes, never used" and declared it his finest work. I have always been a fan of the Webby Awards and their restriction of only 5 words for acceptance speeches.

Time to put an end to faceless e-learning

Clive on Learning

E-learning does, of course, take many forms, but for most corporate users the predominant usage is of interactive self-study materials, what used to be called CBT (computer-based training). Now interactive self-study does not have the best of reputations, with too many students complaining of the tedious, over-structured and impersonal nature of so many of the materials.

Moodle Journal

This week, I guess with no great surprise, I find that those people at Google, who no doubt have been keeping a watchful eye on our surfing habits, have made an encouraging response by launching Google for Educators. My first impression is that this has the makings of a powerful and valuable resource that already features a growing repository of materials, tools, ideas and stories.

So what is software worth?

Clive on Learning

What is the connection between computer software and women's clothing? No, idea? Let me tell you. With the costs of manufacture tumbling as retailers source from the Far East, along with a general easing of import restrictions, the costs of clothing in the high street have fallen to almost unbelievable levels. This is most evident in women's clothing, where at shops like Zara, Mango, H&M and Top Shop, clothing is practically given away.

Tacit vs. Explicit Knowledge - Decisions Learning Professionals Make Everyday

Tony Karrer

A post by Jack Vinson pointed me to What's so great about tacit knowledge? and What's So Great About Tacit Knowledge? - Cont'd. Basically, a lot of what we do in Workplace Learning is trying to extract tacit knowledge (in people's heads), make it explicit (write it down) and then we even turn it into something that can be learned so it will become tacit knowledge in our learners heads.
