I've been asked several times a similar question so I thought I would throw it out to see what readers here will recommend for doing basic video-based elearning authoring. The situation is that they have five, two-hour training videos (10 hours total). It's currently used as a watch and then answer these questions experience. The topic almost doesn't matter, but assume it's Safety Training.

Kylemore Abbey Garden. One of the features of Sakai that our team was looking for in a new LMS is a blogging tool. I admit some significant improvements in usability are possible in this tool. However, it does give us the option of blogging within the system. Previously, we’ve used tools like Wikispaces and Edublogs, but we’ve had a number of requests for internal tools that don’t require a separate login and location.

Some thoughts on the advantages of 3D environments (virtual worlds) for learning. Advantages of 3D Immersive Learning Learner cues on visual, auditory and spatial elements of 3D environment which leads to better recall and application of learning. Learner rehearses on-the-job behavior in an environment as close to job environment as possible. (Realistic learning environment) Allows learners at a distance to be in the same place to practice behaviors (not just online at the same time).

Another way to think about what I was talking about yesterday in revisiting the training department is taking a broader view. I was thinking about it as Learning Design, a view that incorporates instructional design, information design and experience design. I’m leery of the term instructional design, as that label has been tarnished with too many cookie cutter examples and rote approaches to make me feel comfortable (see my Broken ID series ).

What is Good Writing? Rubrics and Good Writing One of my favorite conversation topics is always looking at how school has changed from when I went through. When I was going through school, I often felt that my writing assignments were judged arbitrarily. Teachers would give you a B with little or no explanation. I still believe that content was relatively unimportant.

A few weeks ago, Dave Ferguson shared Anne Derryberry’s interactive storyboard created with xtranormal. Dave was looking at this as a tool for instructional designers to create storyboards with more pop, but I’ve been thinking about this tool as a way for students to create content. One of the courses I’m currently working on is about project-based learning with multimedia.

Yesterday I presented on the topic of "Gadgets, Games and Gizmos for Learning" at AXIOM Professional Health Learning. Thus far, I have conducted five face-to-face online professional networking classes, which focuses on leveraging Linked In for finding business opportunities and professional development opportunities. Class participants are bankers and/or staff from the bank’s support areas and most are very new to social media. I will highlight what has generated the most interest and discussion among the participants.

Yesterday one of my SMEs asked me how I learned about accessibility requirements for online learning. Like most of my instructional design knowledge, I guess I’m self-taught on accessibility. In a previous job, I was given the task of figuring out how to make text-based versions of interactive Flash practice activities. I have seen a lot of estimates out there regarding development times per hour of e-learning content. It baffles me how some designers, not all, can rattle off "150 hours to develop an hour long course." There may be times where we are pushed in a corner and we need to quickly estimate development time without all the information we require, but to get a realistic estimate I suggest we consider the following: The complexity of the content.

I received an inquiry about the need for a low cost LMS solution and I've not had time to help this person with answers. I'm hoping folks can chime in with suggestions and resources. I'll try to aggregate them together. Situation description: I have talked to several vendors and have received quotes at the 6-8k (per year) range for the licensing. We have roughly 500 learners and would use the LMS for mainly tracking and registration of ILT courses, communication (possibly through message boards)

As recently announced by Bersin & Associates , in the United States, corporate learning and development (L&D) expenditures dropped by more than 11 % in 2008. It seems likely that the cuts are will continue in 2009. The organization continues to report that the spending has fallen from $1,202 per learner in 2007 to $1,075 per learner in 2008. Training staff resources are also dropping: Companies overall averaged 3.4 training staffers per 1,000 learners, down from 5.1 per 1,000 in 2007.

Today I watched this 6-minute video clip from MyRaganTV , in which Jim Davis, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of SAS , talks about that company’s approach to Web 2.0. I think Jim maintains a refreshing perspective of Web 2.0 in the corporate sector. SAS doesn’t just talk about transparency, integrity and collaboration: they breathe life into these principles through their application and approach to internal blogs, customer blogs and external social media.

Elliott Masie drew my attention to this splendid website that analyses websites and decides what Myers Briggs Type Inverntory (MBTI) type they are www.typealyzer.com. Aside from the scepticism about how it actually works, I was tickled that my blog come up the same as my personal MBTI type. Based on the narrative I feel extra “charming and trend savvy” – although often on this blog I wonder just how grumpy I sound.

Harold Jarche and Jay Cross have been talking about rethinking the training department, and I have to agree. In principle, if there is a ‘training’ department, it needs to be coupled with a ‘performance’ department and a ‘social learning’ department, all under an organizational learning & performance umbrella. What’s wrong with a training department?
