This week thanks to some major groundbreaking efforts from my fellow Moodle VLE administrator Clive, we now have our DSpace content repository accessible through common authentication with Windows Active Directory via Free Radius server. If you have been following this blog then you may recall the posting DSpace Content Repository - Tuesday, April 12, 2005 , where I reported that the system was now fully installed and rolled out for user access.

In search of the perfect authoring tool

An unnamed government agency sent a delegation down to visit some colleagues as part of a fact finding expedition re e-learning authoring tools. What a splendid waste of taxpayers’ money- that’s your money and my money. It seems completely obvious to me that above a pretty low threshold, the quality of e-learning produced is down to the skills of the instructional designer and the quality of content that they can elicit from the subject matter experts.

These technologies are supposedly designed for learning but that is not true. These technologies are institution-centric and vertical by nature. The concept of Learning Management System (LMS) was wrongly named.

Celebrate Back to School!

Today, my kids went back to school. They were so wound up last night. My oldest said, "I'm so excited its like a holiday.except I can't sleep in tomorrow and I don't get any presents." As I think about my kids getting a year older and going back to school after a short summer. It reminds me of thoughts about technology within schools and it makes me sad they are growing up so fast:( Negative View of Technology in Schools A few schools still have a long way to go in terms of technology.

How Long Should an eLearning Course Be?

Interesting question posed in eLearn Magazine article: How Long Should an E-learning Course Be? Interestingly the author chooses to sidestep the question he poses and instead gives a direct answer to a different question (focusing on modules that are parts of a course): What is a good length for a module? Through countless hours of instructional design, field testing, and client feedback, I have found that 30 minutes is about the maximum, and less than 15 is too short.

I've just booked a four-day trip to Indianapolis to participate in a client problem-solving meeting. There are just four of us participating, two from the UK, to from the USA. The meeting lasts just two days, so the remaining two days are largely wasted in travelling. I'm not that bothered about going to my grave without having seen Indianapolis (no offence, any residents who are reading this), so the travel is no real incentive.
