This week thanks to some major groundbreaking efforts from my fellow Moodle VLE administrator Clive, we now have our DSpace content repository accessible through common authentication with Windows Active Directory via Free Radius server. If you have been following this blog then you may recall the posting DSpace Content Repository - Tuesday, April 12, 2005 , where I reported that the system was now fully installed and rolled out for user access.

Found via Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development A great introduction to using Second Life as a teaching / learning tool. Video embedded below - didn't show in my blog reader. A few thoughts. 1. I've said for a while that Second Life offers something interesting in terms of providing a natural "setting" for online sessions, presentations, etc. because they are based on understood physical settings, e.g., presentation rooms with break out spaces.

Too often learning and development professionals view learning as a one time event.conduct the class, create the e-learning module, craft the job aid.ok, now we are done. Learning doesn't work like that. You can't create a one-and-done and actually expect people's behaviors or attitudes to change. Altering behavior and changing attitudes takes a concentrated effort, a CAMPAIGN.

An unnamed government agency sent a delegation down to visit some colleagues as part of a fact finding expedition re e-learning authoring tools. What a splendid waste of taxpayers’ money- that’s your money and my money. It seems completely obvious to me that above a pretty low threshold, the quality of e-learning produced is down to the skills of the instructional designer and the quality of content that they can elicit from the subject matter experts.

Going on as I do these days with regard to the value of social networking tools practices and the implications for collaboration in learning, which you may well have picked this up from a number of posts in this blog. As its summer now and there are no classes, its given me time to start thinking about trying to see if I can extract anything at all meaningful from the exercise that I encouraged my year 1 level 3 students to carry out at the start of their course in September 06.

Interesting post. Horizontal technologies for learning. In the eLearning sector many vendors have created eLearning solutions primarily for educational institutions. These technologies are supposedly designed for learning but that is not true. These technologies are institution-centric and vertical by nature. The concept of Learning Management System (LMS) was wrongly named.

Integrity is a key attribute of a professional e.g. ICAEW values , Solicitors Regulation Authority code of conduct. Typically integrity is seen as a subjective quality; hard to define. As society becomes more litigious and regulators feel the need to demonstrate compliance more robustly, it is probably only a matter of time before a compliance department suggests routine integrity tests for staff in professional firms.

A good friend and colleague from Intel reminded me of the 70:20:10 rule. Okay.wait a minute. Maybe this actually was the first time I was hearing of this. I feel so out of it. A quick Google search on it turns up this article about Charles Jennings, Global Head of Learning for Reuters. He calls this the 70:20:10 rule. I just saw that BJ had posted about DevLearn and I feel somewhat remiss that he beat me to it. In case you hadn't heard, The eLearning Guild is hosting DevLearn 2007 in San Jose, CA, November 5-8 2007. I'll be there (and doing a few presentations and some special sessions for managers with Lance Dublin). As always, I'll likely be getting together with folks who read this blog and other bloggers and other interesting folks to go have a few beers.

Today, my kids went back to school. They were so wound up last night. My oldest said, "I'm so excited its like a holiday.except I can't sleep in tomorrow and I don't get any presents." As I think about my kids getting a year older and going back to school after a short summer. It reminds me of thoughts about technology within schools and it makes me sad they are growing up so fast:( Negative View of Technology in Schools A few schools still have a long way to go in terms of technology.

Hiding stealthily in the August issue of Accountancy is a story stating that Ernst & Young have created 200 new graduate jobs in India for UK tax compliance work over the next 2 years. If, while playing a video game, the player waits for instructions or information, he or she will fail. Decisive action must be taken immediately. The gamer generation has learned this and expects speed in answers and learning. If a gamer needs information, he or she inputs a question into a search engine and then demands accurate, up-to-date results.

Prensky’s metaphor of people being digital natives (intuitively understanding how recent technology works) or digital immigrants (needing support/ training in order to grasp new technology) seems wonderfully rich to me. Here’s an example from recent life. The other day we were visiting one of my wife’s godsons who was proudly showing off his Wii.

Tuesday, August 28, 2007 3D & Serious Games My company has some experience doing 3D modeling and simulations for government clients, so I found this recent acquisition of this 3D learning company by Lockheed Martin quite interesting. The equation of 3D graphics with "serious games" is something to note.

Interesting question posed in eLearn Magazine article: How Long Should an E-learning Course Be? Interestingly the author chooses to sidestep the question he poses and instead gives a direct answer to a different question (focusing on modules that are parts of a course): What is a good length for a module? Through countless hours of instructional design, field testing, and client feedback, I have found that 30 minutes is about the maximum, and less than 15 is too short.

I've just booked a four-day trip to Indianapolis to participate in a client problem-solving meeting. There are just four of us participating, two from the UK, to from the USA. The meeting lasts just two days, so the remaining two days are largely wasted in travelling. I'm not that bothered about going to my grave without having seen Indianapolis (no offence, any residents who are reading this), so the travel is no real incentive.
