Some of the older smartphones may not be able to smoothly process high data loads, and some deliverables may have to be accessed through the company’s firewall, which could cause problems for devices outside the organization. The new CMI-5 standard with xAPI allows us to launch and track content without necessarily using an LMS.

“Our vendor didn’t give us the source files , but can you update these old Flash-based courses to HTML5?”. Instead, our employees are Googling quick answers outside our firewall. On the other side of things, even a straightforward PowerPoint-to-HTML5 course conversion project can be a massive undertaking.

How will the tools evolve further to capitalize the real power of this standard? In many organizations the courses are locked behind firewalls or LMS and the learner has limited access to them. To management, streamlining usually implies standardizing processes or content, and having fewer systems and repositories. At a minimum, that means HTML5, not Flash, for tablets and phones. But you can extend your reach with xAPI. Luckily, xAPI is here to help. You can think of the xAPI standard as “mobile SCORM.”
