I have included Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Evaluation in every proposal I have ever written, and I wanted to hear from Kirkpatrick himself regarding his take on the current state of evaluation and whether his four levels are still viable. Well, based on where Kirkpatrick and his son James are today, I was completely wrong.

And as time has gone by, I have started to wonder about the validity of Kirkpatrick in today’s world. The title was “Expanding ROI in Training Programs Using Scriven, Kirkpatrick, and Brinkerhoff,” which sounds pretty academic. What I liked was that McGoldrick didn’t critique the Kirkpatrick model. But it wasn’t.

Luckily, Donald Kirkpatrick created a training evaluation model that gives this process a clear structure. This type of evaluation is often conducted at the end of the session by giving out short forms to fill in or, in the case of online training , it consists of an internet based survey containing the same questions as the paper version.

Our conversation centered on whether or not companies should limit their employees’ use of the internet and social media while at work. One friend mentioned that her company doesn’t allow her to use the internet, period, because they expect her full attention to be on patients for the entire day. And she felt this to be acceptable.

What’s more, they are beginning to use it at an increasingly young age – a recent study from the Joan Ganz Cooney Center and Sesame Workshop (producers of Sesame Street) found that 80% of children age 5 and under use the Internet at least once a week.
