Personal Web Tools (PWTs) are thought by some to be synonymous with PLEs (Personal Learning Environments) but the two should not be confused. Certainly not the VLE.

I was also asked why I didn't use the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). Online material can be saved, tagged, categorized, and repurposed without difficulty." The two are not to be confused.

The ALT-C 'VLE is Dead' Symposium got a mention, as did my reference to the work of anarchist philosopher Ivan Illich. Always an emotive subject, the BECTA discussion on the institutional VLE descended to the level of name-calling.

The institutional network locked me out. Eventually, bless 'em, they logged me into a specialised system - known as the access grid - which was open with no networking restrictions. Typical PLEs will incorporate a social networking service, reflective and collaborative tools, e-mail and a mobile device. No access to Elluminate.
