There were some interesting and captivating debates on Day 1, including of course, the epic VLE is Dead debate (see the video above) which was attended by approximately 150 people, all squeezed into a room fit for 80 so that many had to sit on the floor or stand at the back. There has been a bit of discussion on Twitter, and at our recent ALT-C VLE symposium, on the importance of naming things. A lot of people don't like the name 'Web 2.0', because of its connotations, and some have tried to rename it. At the VLE is Dead symposium , there was an issue over the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment).

The ALT-C 'VLE is Dead' Symposium got a mention, as did my reference to the work of anarchist philosopher Ivan Illich. Always an emotive subject, the BECTA discussion on the institutional VLE descended to the level of name-calling.

Got me thinking about the opacity of some VLE systems. OK, this is my opinion, but many VLEs are not fit for purpose, and masquerade as solutions for the management of online learning. Others are overpriced aggregations of web tools that you can get for free out on the web if you know where to look for them.
