When my copy of the second edition ASTD Handbook arrived at the office this summer, I immediately felt the urge to explore my new resource and see what content made the final cut for an important industry asset. If not already adopted, mobile learning is now certainly featuring in most strategy discussions within L&D teams in large and small enterprises. Enid Crystal of the New York Chapter of ASTD started off the week by summarizing my in-person visit to the joint NYU Higher Ed and eLearning SIG joint meeting. We then discussed various examples of gamification. If you are interested in the book, you can purchase a copy at the ASTD Book Store. The meeting was a lot of fun.

Tonight I was lucky enough to attend a Tony Bingham (ASTD's CEO) presentation at University of MD, Baltimore County (UMBC). Ruth Clark posted at ASTD an article titled “ Why Games Don’t Teach.” In the previously mentioned discussion, Tahiya Marome made this point: For the brain, play is learning and learning is play. ” It’s a deliberately provocative title, meant to draw attention and cause controversy.
The MobiMOOC is now in its second week and there have been some very interesting discussions happening there. So far on the MobiMOOC, almost all the discussions have had an academic bent or context. Personally, it’s been a great experience getting to understand the very diverse opinions and views.
I will not discuss all details (you should read the book) but what they do is take the iterative nature (short development sprints) of agile development and combine it with a prototyping approach. If you have the budget for it, go to an elearning conference ( DevLearn and ASTD TechKnowledge are two of the biggies, but there are smaller more local conferences that might work for you). SALT , elearning guild and ASTD are just a few places to start. that provides some good discussion and practical tips.
TODAY”S BLOG STOP: April 30: Enid Crystal New York ASTD Chapter Blog. Clark Quinn started the week off at Learnlets with a discussion of the word “gamification” (he would prefer a more meaningful term like “engagification” especially since “gamification” does seem to carry some negative connotations.
At the Financial Times, I provided my input along with the input of many of the leaders of the field of gamification in a discussion about the topic from a learning and instructional perspective. Of late there have been some interesting conversations on the web discussing categorization of tablet learning. In a recent ASTD webinar on Mobile Learning it was noted that it’s the iPad that’s really got mlearning kick started in the workplace (link to webinar recording and notes). However, it’s not that simple.
The week opened with a posting of the tour stops on the Learning Circuit’s Blog and the Kapp Notes blog and then introduced everyone to the Facebook page for the book and then the discussion really ramped up with Jane Bozarth talking about the how the book takes a common sense look at the subject.

Bob Pike launched the third and final day of ASTD’s Middle East and North Africa event with a keynote that took some well-established principles of good learning design and put his own unique and engaging spin on them. Along the way he discussed learning styles (in a different phrase) and generations.
