Thursday, May 24, 2007 Brain Plasticity & Cognitive Abilities Ive just read Richard Nantels post The Ultimate Pretest in which he talks about his interest in brain plasticity. Im a believer in this stuff. Is cognitive ability plastic? And what is cognitive ability, really? It gives me hope that me get smarter some day.

Because its true -- you can impress your clients and peers by working "cognitive load" into a sentence. Im not a big theory person. Im much more into practical application. Im not saying that these theories are right or wrong -- but they get tossed about and referred to with great relish by some in the industry.

For various reasons, Im not going to go back to school to get a Masters Degree in instructional design. But I firmly believe that this journey Im on is giving me the experience and educational equivalent (if not better) than a formal M.Ed. Even though Ive been doing this ("instructional design") for over ten years, Im starting over.

Im struck by why I find this topic so interesting. And on that note, I think Im pretty much done now with my learning styles assignment. So, what do I do if Im not doing that? I use words like "cognitive load theory" or "working memory". Im not such an anal person, so this isnt my favorite thing in the world. And Im really excited about the project Im working on. Im on the fence if I want to get into Instructional Design or be an Eduction Advisor.
