For various reasons, Im not going to go back to school to get a Masters Degree in instructional design. But I firmly believe that this journey Im on is giving me the experience and educational equivalent (if not better) than a formal M.Ed. Even though Ive been doing this ("instructional design") for over ten years, Im starting over.

We used a different approach: The Playground Theory of Learning developed by Shelly Loewen. Ive been looking into the learning styles theory a bit the last few days, after having a humble learning moment. Theories do not help us to expand our awareness and understanding of learning; they serve to reduce and confine it.

Once youve hooked them in, then you can let them know what theyll be able to do afterward, but while if that were done *really* well, I still think its better to hook them in viscerally before you go for the cognitive realization of what theyll learn. Cammy, I think you make a great distinction between storage and processing -- it reminds me of some of the cognitive theory, where we have to work with stuff in short-term memory both to help encode whatever the stuff is, and to be able to retrieve and work with it again later. Cammy: Although I like to think Im good-humored, I am leery of "humor" or "fun" (scare quotes are deliberate) injected into training like salt water into a frozen turkey. By that I mean you cant just smear "fun" on and make training better, as if its some kind of cognitive Clearasil. Im glad youre on board with my ducks!

If youre providing SMEs with the templates, Im not sure theyll be altering them. Im not saying there is no place for templates (honestly!), So what Im saying is, we can work with SMEs -- use templates as a starting point -- and still hope to create good learning experiences. Im trying to advise a client but I have little to no experience in this area. So the vendor can closely track actual usage and charge based on that actual usage?
