What is SAAS and why is hosted better than having it on your own servers. The bottom line without getting technical or overly detailed, the solution is hosted on your vendor’s servers and not hosted on your internal servers. Benefits versus having it on my servers (behind my firewall).

While there are a couple of vendors out there who have incorporated e-mail that can go to outside to people, rather than just within the learning management product, the overall space isn’t doing it. To hold photos, images, media files – eventually moved to word docs. Online Storage i.e online hard drives.

Vendors who offer the ability to upload your PowerPoint, word docs, slides, etc. So you can have your PPT or whatever docs and upload them into the presentation while you are taking. Upload your PPT or docs or whatever ahead of time. Does the recording stay on the vendor’s server and attendees access it?

But, the reason I constantly bash this into e-learning vendors heads is this just DON’T GET IT. Companies are leaving Outlook and moving to GMail, so why not offer your customers the capability to have e-mail as a feature in your system. Tie it into their servers. E-Learning 24/7. I like that.

Most folks just toss that stuff in the trash, and when you think about it; isn’t it about time we focused more on saving paper i.e. the trees, then spending time tossing slick ad docs into a bag? The biggest knock on the show in previous years was that it was getting smaller with less vendors. Hey, where can I find a CBT course?

If you want to track in a learning management system or learning platform that supports SCORM then you want it. If your goal is just to post the course on a server and let people access it, just for the sake of learning and you don’t care about tracking of any sort – then no, you do not need any compliance standard.

I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Google Docs – ever heard of em? SaaS: Software is in the cloud, on the internet. The list goes on and on.
