Telecommute Instructional Design Jobs

Experiencing eLearning

About six weeks ago, I added a new feature to my sidebar: an Ask A Question button. This idea was mentioned on Problogger as a way to promote your blog, find out what content is actually relevant to your readers, and improve interaction and community. Since I was already getting a number of questions in comments, I thought I’d try this out to see what kind of questions I received.

What to Say When a Colleagues' Family Member Dies

Tony Karrer

This is fairly off topic for this blog, but this is something that's come up several times recently for me, and I've struggled with it each time. This morning I received a note from a colleague to tell me that their mother died last night and that they couldn't do our scheduled call. I'm always at a loss as to what to say. I honestly sat in front of the email this morning trying to figure out what I should be saying.

You ask for some online games.I give you the FBI.

Kapp Notes

Ok, so one of my favorite quotes in Die Hard is when Hans and Theo are trying to get into the vault and Theo is not sure how they are going to get past a certain lock and then, the FBI agents (Johnson and Johnson)cut the power circuits thus opening the vault and Hans says "The circuits which cannnot be cut locally are cut automatically in response to a terrorist attack.

Corporate Policies on Web 2.0

Tony Karrer

One of the barriers commonly cited during my presentations around eLearning 2.0 (use of Web 2.0 / social media for work and learning) is that organizations often have not established their policies or guidelines around the use of these tools. Unfortunately, companies sticking their head in the sand doesn't do any good. Employees are using these things in some way.

Second Life Created Virtual Documentary

Kapp Notes

Second Life and movies have had a history. In my post Second Life at the Movies , I discuss the possibility of a full-feature length movie being created in Second Life. Well it has finally happened as a documentary. Filmmaker Douglas Gayeton has created a documentary-style film about an avatar's search for "the creator." In the documentary, the avatar known as Molotov Alva searchers for meaning by searching for the creator and along the way meets some really interesting avatars.

eLearning Strategy Presentation

Clark Quinn

I gave my eLearning Strategy presentation to the eLearning Division of ASTD’s LA Chapter. Despite some technical hiccups (GoToWebinar doesn’t seem to have a chat feature, nor does it allow Mac users to be presenters, ahem), the presentation went off reasonably well. And now, it’s available online. It takes quite a while to load (guess it’s *huge*), but you can hear the whole hour+.

I was invited to present at an ‘e-Book and Content’ event the other day, which unlike so many of the venues I had been invited to before, was attended predominantly by non-academic staff. In the main the audience was made up from by library / information professionals, administrators and publishers. Much of the theme for the event naturally centred on the subject of e-Books, which many appeared to agree, was the next natural stage in publication and distribution for learning materials.

Social Media in Plain English

Experiencing eLearning

The folks at Common Craft have another great video, this time about social media. What I especially like about this one is that it doesn’t talk about technology until near the end. The video focuses on the metaphor of ice cream: it can be mass-produced in a factory that focuses only on flavors with mass appeal, or individuals can create their own flavors at home.

Why Customization is Essential for an Effective LMS Strategy in Your Company

Customization is crucial for an effective LMS strategy. A one-size-fits-all approach no longer works for diverse and dynamic organizations. Customizable LMS platforms allow tailored learning experiences that meet specific company needs, boost user engagement, and seamlessly integrate with existing systems. Customization also supports scalability, adapting as an organization evolves, ensuring long-term investment value.

Games and Learner Assessment

The article outlines some good ideas for integrating assessments into games and why simply sticking a multiple choice question into an otherwise "cool" game doesn't make it an educational game or even fun. Because computers can quickly and accurately grade [Multiple Choice Questions] MCQs, those types of questions have become the foundation of almost all modern testing.

Manga on the rise…

Clark Quinn

I’ve long been a proponent of comics for learning, recognizing some great cognitive and emotional properties they possess, so I was thrilled when, in a sales presentation the potential client suggested using manga as a communication vehicle. It’s usually a hard sell, and here he was asking for it! More is happening these days, thankfully.

The emphasis on testing in artificial environments that are abstracted from a real world context seems to create a lot of heated debate. The issue of stress and pressure placed on kids to.

Shaping a Better Future by Uniting Corporate and Higher Education Content

With the increased interest in reskilling and upskilling existing workforces, companies are looking for more training and development content and realizing that higher education has a lot to offer. Similarly, companies are finding value in providing training to students and preskilling their future workforce. The challenge is that the technology and platforms used to serve these two audiences have never had to work well together—until now.
