Tuesday, March 25, 2008 Jott This Blog I havent had so much time lately to blog, as this project Im working on has been quite grueling. I find my best time for thinking up excellent blog entries is late at night when Im lying in bed. That is, of course, if Im even awake after the kids have finally fallen asleep.
However, what exactly is micro-learning remains a bit of an elusive concept with different people defining it in different ways. Can a 10-minute learning byte be defined as micro-learning? Would a commoncraft-style video be considered micro-learning? An app with a 2-minute recipe is micro-learning.
My current business card says Im a "Manager of Instructional Design". I have learned everything I "know" about instructional design and teaching by doing. Got accepted to a Masters program for secondary ed, but deferred. Lots of video. We had a novelist, turned video pro, who was our most creative instructional designer.
Im literally not a gamer. I find games as addictive as programming so I avoid both like the plague. Im not sure how I got into games.but I think it had something to do with PONG. I play video games and enjoy them but I am more like a Gamer 2.0 But Im so lost at sea for the most part in these environments.
So Im going to try to mix it up a bit. Im still smiling. But Im wearing a different purple shirt. In this TED Talks video of Mena Trott , founder of Six Apart, she talks about taking a picture of herself everyday and posting them on her (private) blog. The video seems less harsh when its seen in its original context, which is interspersed through episode 2 of Pure Pwnage. That said, Im a little concerned that the gamer mentality is sometimes presented as important to corporate culture and that as a result women should get into gaming. I play geography games, but Im not a gamer.
They often use slick video to show a concept while a voice-over explains everything, so the learners only role is to passively absorb. Im not saying to leave the info a mystery; Im saying that Ive seen a lot of elearning that seems to underestimate the intelligence of the learner and makes every little thing painfully explicit.
