Jay Cross, the author of the 2007 seminal book, InformalLearning, Rediscovering the Natural Pathways that Inspire Innovation and Performance , recently wrote a blog post in which he explained that although there has been a lot of talk about “informallearning” in the last five years, there has been very little action.

When fully realized and supported, emergent learning provides autonomy, mastery and purpose to learners and agility, adaptability and resilience to organizations. It empowers learners to build their personal learning networks (PLN) and personal knowledge management (PKM) by leveraging technology to connect a distributed and diverse workforce.
The beauty in these 4 simple truths is that they do not favor formal or informallearning but in each it is critical that all 4 are attended to. Real learning will also serve me well as a lens that I can view each of my approaches and in particular I aim to put more emphasis on reflection.
PLEs, PLNs, PKM, or whatever else you may call it have learning in their DNA but I sense there’s a lot more going on. These are structures that can improve our learning but they can also improve our lives. For one thing, Stephen, George, and Dave are very bright guys. They also give good show.
