How many of you, have experience in instructional design but only from the ILT or paper-based perspective? How many of you, are familiar with terms such as ADDIE? Ask them if they know what ADDIE stands for? How many of you who have been offered this amazing opportunity use a rapid course authoring tool?
One my mantras I have consistency followed is that elearning is an analogue to a television drama. Too often, I visit learning that is frankly weak even if it has all the requisite objectives, structure, and guiding scaffold, e.g. ADDIE by example. For instance, say ‘instructor led training’ before saying ILT.
Others in HR who do move or are forced to (not universal) follow the same approach (ILT) when it comes to courses – i.e. linear and heavy PowerPoint. Data supports success in e-learning over ILT, but hey there are people who still use VCRs (sorry, VHS is never returning – but hey, you can get a tape for less than a buck!).
People coming from ILT who have never built an e-learning course. Unless you are an ID (instructional designer) or e-learning developer who was inspired by Gagne, you are not touching this with a five foot pole. I have yet to meet an educator who uses Gagne. Theory loaded garbage? Yowsa, a lot out there. Geez, what an honor.
At a simple level, use ADDIE, it is a starting point, and even today many ID folks utilize it in some fashion. If you are believe that ILT must stay at your company/business and that blended learning means only ILT and online (it doesn’t. Anyway, there are people who just won’t move away from ILT.
