But in 2010, after putting out a call for vendors to develop a set of next-gen eLearning standards, the governing body of SCORM, Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL), tasked a company—Rustici Software—with that responsibility. xAPI is also helpful to anyone looking to integrate their own (in-house) LMS with third-party products and vendors.
It turns out that there are several valid and research-based reasons for including fantasy as a key element in the design of games to help people learn. For the last 18 years, some of the most important work we’ve done at Rustici Software has been the standards-based efforts we’ve worked on with the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL). At Rustici, our software is primarily responsible for helping eLearning organizations achieve “interoperability.”
This standard is being developed by Rustici Software (with a world-wide active community participating and contributing) for Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) – the keepers of SCORM. Here are some ideas - SCORM Test Suite One of the best things about SCORM (ADL's Sharable Content Reference Model) is that it is pretty easy to test and diagnose problems. The test suite was created to try to help get implementations to work together better. The question is what to do about it. The test suite can be downloaded here.
I also learned Tin Can API is also being called ExperienceAPI, but it depends on who you talk to, ADL or Rustici. Being able to view and hear the learner''s immediate reaction and feedback to the simulation was great as a course evaluation tool and can be a helpful in coaching the learner too. Hope to see you there next year!
I was sequestered in a conference room during Plugfest 9 with Philip Dodds, chief architect of the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM™) and a few people on the ADL technical team. With us was Tom King, who helped create Authorware.
Recently, ADL (the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative) launched the xAPI Adopter Registry , which lists xAPI Adopters and Conformant LRSs.
