The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant. The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough. And academics fought for a variety of theoretical positions. Absolutely!
Later on the ADL was formed and they wanted a more extended standard, based on the AICC specs. So the ADL developed Scorm in a different (technical) way and we ended up with two standards. Both the ADL and AICC where working on a new generation of standards.
I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of weeks learning about some things that are happening with ADL (the governing body for SCORM and closest thing we currently have to a single steward for xAPI right now). Some funding things happened at ADL, but ADL will continue to do work on xAPI and with the xAPI community.
Problem Based Learning: A learner-centred approach that’s similar to Scenario Based Learning. In this approach, learners are presented with a problem and gain knowledge from the development of a solution. Question pool : A pool of reusable questions from which an exam or survey can be created.
This approach prompts learners to read, discuss, and solve problems in order to synthesize course content. Examples of active learning activities include practical tasks and problem-solving conducted in small groups. ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning). Problem Based Learning. Assessment. Question Pool.
For the current ADL webinar series on mobile, I gave a presentation on contextualizing mobile in the larger picture of L&D (a natural extension of my most recent books). They’re also useful for coaching & mentoring as well, as for problem-solving, innovating, and more.
More than that is most often not expected and can cause you integration problems. There are a bunch of other standards by ADL (who is responsible for SCORM ), IMS , IEEE LTSC including CORDRAâ„¢ , LOM , Meta-data , etc. Note: ARIADNE, AICC, IEEE LTSC, and IMS all participate in ADL's work on SCORM). in the eLearning world.
Today on the xAPI working group call, ADL shared some news about their funding over the next 12 months. SCORM isn’t evolving much these days. Let us know if we can help you.
The client's staff is too busy to run a series of tests and they have no patience for problems. Here are some ideas - SCORM Test Suite One of the best things about SCORM (ADL's Sharable Content Reference Model) is that it is pretty easy to test and diagnose problems. This happens both to external and internal developers.
Without isolation of variables, research is difficult and drawing conclusions becomes extremely problematic so then research falls into the realm of self-reporting which has its own set of validity problems. Some how I’d like to see a way of looking at the entire game/simulation experience and evaluating that has a whole.
A couple of days ago, I wrote about the state of ADL and Rustici Software’s take on it. Back in the SCORM days, one of the fundamental problems was that it was simply tough to tell what was going on when a LMS launched a piece of content. ADL’s guiding hand. Number one might be pretty obvious to you.
Rewind briefly to a day in 2010, when the dew was still fresh and early morning sun filled the meeting room at Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). The primary problem with SCORM is its core philosophy. Another Problem With SCORM. Fortunately, the ADL effort wasn’t a total loss. The Trouble With SCORM. Well, not exactly.
Use an ADL-conformant Learning Record Store (LRS)+. Gamification: Gamify your training programs with no problem and great results. Plus, for a Free plan, SCORM Cloud only allows 100MB files storage space and the help tool gets short when it comes to functionality while an LMS platform would have all this problem perfectly solved.
Hosted by ADL and NTSA , iFEST is a great conference that brings together people from the military, government, academic and industry sectors to discuss ways to evolve the distributed learning and training landscape. If you can’t make it to our virtual booth next week, no problem.
ADL, the maker of SCORM, has released two main versions over the years: SCORM 1.2, There are tools that allow you to test how conformant your course is, and let you debug any problems. While IMS & IEEE held meetings to get learning content standards nailed down, ADL just put their foot down with SCORM (and US Defense is a big foot), and it pretty much got everyone’s attention. The problem is when they’re around the same thing! But it’s having standards that matters.
This conclusion is drawn from studies that looked into cognitive learning outcomes in the areas of basic motor skills, descriptive knowledge, conceptual knowledge, problem solving, and general cognitive strategies. Instructional games seem to foster higher-order thinking such as planning and reasoning more than factual or verbal knowledge.
That creates a problem for SCORM right there in that most eLearning content was made for the bigger displays of desktop and laptop computers. We did not create this, it is a proof of concept created by Advanced Distributed Learning ( ADL ) and made freely available. Standards to Advance Mobile Learning. Click the link to learn more.
Tin Can API was developed by Rustici Software when they were contracted by ADL, the keepers of SCORM, to come up with a new approach to learning systems and methodology. This was the year 2010 and ADL was looking for research ideas for the development of the next generation of SCORM. The Problem. How Does Tin Can API Work?
The idea was that you have content in SCORM and add it to your learning system that accepts SCORM, and tada, it works without any problems or issues. Computers flip through these “books” faster, but when the amount of data is large, it starts to become a big problem.
And in a way to address them, the SCORM model was created as part of the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative. As such, finding an LMS platform for your SCORM-compliant courses won’t be a problem at all. For instance, you can always provide your learnings with training that suits their learning path.
To solve this problem, in 1999 the government tasked a small research laboratory, ADL, to “develop common specifications and standards for e-learning.” In the late 1990s, each learning management system had its own proprietary content format, which encouraged vendor lock-in.

However, this model may run into problems with extranet users (other users besides the employees). It is responsible for receiving, storing, and providing access to all eLearning records.
It was the very same Sequencing and Navigation content examples that I had authored for ADL, and while they didn't work, they assured me that I was reading the instructions wrong that described the expected experience -- the same instructions that I, in fact, helped write when I developed the content. Solves at least 50% of problems.
The problem was that there was no agreed structure for eLearning at this time, so every piece of content had to be tailored for a specific delivery system. The Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL) answered the call, and developed the Sharable Content Object Reference Model, more conveniently known as SCORM. Future of SCORM?
Part of the problem though is that there is a lot of information out there, some of it erroneous in nature and honestly, equally confusing.
