Patrick was kind enough to write-up his opinion on the matter and allow me to post it here on the LearnDash blog. Some organizations still have a big investment in legacy content that communicates using the SCORM or AICC formats. Since SCORM/AICC is such an old standard, the newer platforms such as WordPress will not support it.

Every time I write about the course standards, whether on my blog or, lately, on LinkedIn, I receive a lot of responses, feedback, and folks wanting to know more. SCORM’s premise, not what it can or cannot do, was its huge premise of interoperability—far more so than AICC. Why would anyone still want to use AICC?

But, I'm going to try to make a practice of creating blog posts around some of the questions. AICC goes after the same thing as what I've described above for SCORM (tracking under an LMS). Most of the time, it's to handle cross-domain issues, i.e., learning content is on different server than learning management.

LMS-agnostic eLearning complies with industry standards The SCORM standard is the oldest and best-known eLearning standard, but LMS-agnostic content should support the AICC and xAPI standards as well. AICC Content libraries might also reference the AICC standard, which is similar to SCORM 1.2. also support AICC.

Widgets – low, but growing (future blog on trends). SCORM/AICC/PENS/IMS. While I know many LMS vendors and their customer base, I won’t say who they are in this blog, but trust me, big names abound. Those that don’t are due to: Your tool works only with SCORM 2004 3rd edition, and your LMS only accepts AICC.
