Cammy Beans Learning Visions Musings on eLearning, instructional design and other training stuff. Wednesday, January 16, 2008 Im a (K)nitwit! Cold nights coupled with a growing maternal nesting instinct, have forced me to buy some yarn, pull out the needles, and learn how to knit. Its winter here in New England.
Is this the first time you are hearing about Learning Tools Interoperability? In LTI these learning applications are called Tools (delivered by Tool Providers), and the LMS, or platforms, are called Tool Consumers. This means that money spent on corporate training will go to good use and provide an excellent return on the investment.
Im not looking for the obtuse theory books. Im already feeling a bit overwhelmed. Im about halfway through Michael Allens new book, Designing Successful E-Learning. Between you and John Im going to need to ask for a visit to Ikea for a new bookshelf too! I prefer the get-down-and-dirty variety. What would you add?
Overall, I thought this article was a good read, although I found the title a little misleading. This article focused more on what instructional designers should not be (lone gunmen). Tony, Id be delighted if this question were expanded to the larger Learning Circuits audience. Thank you for all the comments and insights.
This August 21 article posted by Sharon Gaudin in Information Week reports that Half of Companies are Blocking Facebook: "Employers are increasingly blocking access to Facebook because theyre concerned about the time wasted and the information leaked when workers use social networks on company time." And Im in complete agreement.
Monday, May 21, 2007 Learning Styles as Fortune Telling My research into understanding the role of learning styles in e-Learning continues. Im struck by why I find this topic so interesting. I was pointed in the direction of a good article on learning styles from Harold Stolovich via Guy Wallace.

Monday, June 25, 2007 Getting Pysched for FaceBook Im definitely feeling out-of-my element in this whole FaceBook thing. Im trying to get into it and discover its potential professional uses. Im feeling lonely and really nerdy.
Tuesday, June 19, 2007 Using FaceBook Im trying to expand my horizons a bit these days and have been taking a closer look at a whole bunch of tools out there, including SecondLife and FaceBook. There was a great NYTimes article a few weeks ago about a mom signing up for a FaceBook account, completely appalling her teenage daughter.
I found a good LifeHacker article expounding on the wonders of the Google Sidebar. Back to the Google Desktop -- Im playing around a bit with the searching capabilities and am seeing the light. So the search feature -- I get that and Im sold. Im not sure if the Sidebar would make me more productive or just more distracted.I
Im concerned that women will be excluded if such a focus is put on gaming skills -- or at least the gamer label. Im just raising some questions. Check out this article called Girl’s Night Logged On which is really intersting about a female gaming dynamic that is rarely discussed. I dont have a conclusion here.
Cammy Beans Learning Visions Musings on eLearning, instructional design and other training stuff. And Im not implying that Im a Second Life naysayer. Thursday, May 18, 2006 A General Theory of Love An article in National Geographic about the chemistry of love sparked a conversation with my friend Bob. Not because Im trying to figure out the mysteries of love (although that would be nice, too) -- but because it turns out Im extremely fascinated by the brain and how it works.
Im still a really hands-on person. Or maybe Im just too lazy and poor. Now, Im not linking to John just because he is full of praise of me (which is nice and somewhat embarrassing, I must admit.), Im with you, Maria! An inquiry class Im taking takes me into the mind of Sherlock Holmes. 4:35 PM Cammy Bean said.
That said, Im a little concerned that the gamer mentality is sometimes presented as important to corporate culture and that as a result women should get into gaming. Im a bit of an über a-hole when it comes to stereotypical representations - the giggly "girl" (which is the name of this episode) just lights my match. Which is correct?
Tweetdeck Im officially hooked to Twitter and use Tweetdeck to organize and group those I follow. So easy to clip from articles online, jot down to do lists, and tag and organize it all. Delicious Tag articles as you go. But Gcal helps me keep myself organized, and now that Ive discovered CalenGoo for the iPod Im all synched up.
This hasnt gotten onto my radar before -- Im not sure if there are any state-funded online programs in Massachusetts. As I recall, she has two kids in high school who are taking online courses, and thats what got her interested in ID and e-learning. And its increasingly being funded as part of the U.S. public school system.
Ive been looking into the learning styles theory a bit the last few days, after having a humble learning moment. I found some great articles/old posts on learning styles, thanks to Cathy Moore who pointed me to her reading list. 1) Learning Styles, ha, ha, ha Jay Cross December 2005 The comment thread is really great.
They reduce confusion, and support self-paced learning by anticipating learner needs. Hyperlinking to related resources: embedding links to additional articles, tools, or official policies can help broaden the scope of learning beyond the document itself. What do all of these interactive elearning examples have in common?
Came across this post on Guy Wallaces Pursing Performance Blog, Debunking the Myth -- There Is No Such Thing as "Learning Styles". I take it that Guy is not a fan of learning styles. Guy includes the text of a 2001 article by Sigmund Tobias of Fordham University. Jean, You make some great points about learning styles.
I'd like to see an article written with a bit more caution in the message. I've been watching this concept develop since the early days of the IMS. I had an interesting conversation with an industry representative on the IMS Council. If SCORM is hype, the concept of LearningObjects is bigger hype.
"And hopefully, they are flexible enough that they can be altered as needed in order to create an effective learning experience." If youre providing SMEs with the templates, Im not sure theyll be altering them. Im not saying there is no place for templates (honestly!), Im getting a lot out of the conversation.

We've stopped using LearningObjects right? Saw this article in TechCrunch , about Google firing up chatbots again. . Look to where your people are already using tools, maybe as pedestrian as IM.
