There is a great deal of "churn" in the 3D virtual immersive environment space. Microsoft has awarded one of its innovation awards to 3D Virtual Immersive Environment Enterprise provider ProtonMedia. First, it looks as though Linden Labs, the developers behind Second Life, may be downsizing their corporate efforts ( Second Life Enterprise Edition ). Two sources indicate that Linden may actually be shutting down their Enterprise operations. Some interesting developments in the 3D Learning and Collaboration Space.
Yesterday, Philip Linden (AKA: Philip Rosedale ) stepped down as CEO of Linden Labs (yes again). Bob will lead Linden Lab while we conduct the search. He said many longtime Second Life users are angry at the recent decisions by the company that runs the service, Linden Lab. He has done this before and then come back.
Here is an interesting rumor and a potentially large game-changer in the virtualworld space. Here is a quote from the article. So while I haven't seen any official notice or indication that Linden Labs is shopping around Second Life or that anyone is purchasing the product, the rumors do seem to be adding up.
Virtualworld provider, VenueGen , recently came out of private Beta to a public Beta (whatever that means) and loudly announced their virtual meeting platform. It has been described as a lot more than Cisco’s WebEx meeting platform, and a lot less than Linden Labs’ Second Life virtualworld.
