A few organizations I pay attention to include the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD), International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI), and the eLearning Guild. --3-- Even if the topic of a local program isn’t right up your alley, the conversations you have with industry peers can be a helpful source of ideas.
The Human Performance Technology approach (ala ISPI) is a necessary analysis before ADDIE, but it’s too infrequently seen. What impact, if any, do you think that the shortened attention span habits dictated by most social media will have on e-learning? Our wetware hasn’t changed, just our tolerance of certain behaviors.

Think about how much there is to know to do this job, and then extend your vision to the attention that regulators pay to it. Consider ISPI and eLearning Guild. Take retirement. Consider the stress it provokes in customers. If this is your business, best not throw a single solution at it, no matter how nifty that solution is.
You can do some neat stuff in your courses that grab the user’s attention which may help get them engaged with the content. If you’re interested in a workshop in your area, have your local ISPI or ASTD chapter contact me. There’s a place for the cool interactions. But any novel interactivity you add to the course can quickly wear off.
