With re-entering the job market I have also begun familiarizing myself with the e-learning tools and learning management systems out there that are not part of my current tool set.

The BigQuestion on the ASTD Learning Circuits Blog is long enough to fill a post all by itself: How do you assess whether your informal learning, social learning, continuous learning, performance support initiatives have the desired impact or achieve the desired results? but then your job has and always will be to unpick all this.

My response here is not so much an answer to this question, but rather, further musings on this endless topic that Ive been rambling on about of late.
November's BigQuestion on the Learning Circuits Blog has been posted. The question this month is: Are ISD / ADDIE / HPT relevant in a world of rapid elearning, faster time-to-performance, and informal learning? To me, this is one of the most important questions facing us today.
When I got older, I always seemed to have jobs that required me to travel (someone has a warped sense of humor). Instead of the nice map cover, I had an obscure piece of Pennsylvania highway on the front. I did not do well folding a map and only a little better reading it.

Learning is part of the job, truly just-in-time and work-flow based. Well, we aren’t quite there yet.
The fun part of my job is having a plethora of tools in my ‘elearning development’ toolbox: Adobe Creative Suite, Captivate, Visio, Lectora, and now Articulate. There are many others, but these are the most popular and most widely used.
I have spent much of my life running classroom courses and feeling I was doing a really good job. Of course some needs will still have to be met using a face-to-face classroom approach, but that won't keep everyone who's currently a classroom trainer in a job, unless you want to earn half as much. First thought: I'm not sure.

What will the mix of Push vs. Pull Learning; Formal vs. Informal supported by the organization? What are they doing?
The April BigQuestion in the Learning Circuits Blog is simply ‘how do we keep up?’ We know so much more now about how people learn that we are better equipped than ever to do a good job. It responds to this plea from a reader: Isn't this an ever-expanding universe of tech goodies?
As workplace educators, our job is to help people succeed in the workplace. Now enter the bigquestion. Your SME has a day job, and it’s not the same as your day job. How can we best s upport SMEs who may be juggling their day jobs with our projects? Our SMEs have a different role.
Does this data show that employees changed their behavior on the job based on your training? How have employees’ behaviors on-the-job changed since training took place? Now the bigquestion is…How? It shows they did it and passed a test. It shows if they liked it. But none of this means they actually learned anything.
The reason only 10%-15% of what is learned shows up on the job is that most of what you learn disappears rapidly unless it’s reinforced by reflection and practice. You need to wait a while before taking the assessment. Smile-sheets and test scores prove nothing because they are administered before the forgetting curve sets in.
