Working out loud has been steadily gaining popularity and has become a topic of conversation on many forums including the Facebook community of the same name. It has helped me to develop my personal learning network (PLN) and enabled my PKM. I am a huge believer of the practice because I have experienced the effect first hand.
The table below captures the shifts as I see it: I have been writing about social and collaborative learning, the importance of communities of practices and networked learning skills like building one’s PLN and PKM for some time now. L&D needs to facilitate this for organizations to continually learn.
Only to be disillusioned by the lack of engagement on these platforms, empty discussion forums and zero conversations. As an L&D professional who is passionate about self-driven learning, #pkm and #pln, and believe in and evangelize social and informal learning, I realize it’s time to take a step back and do a reality check.
Even if corporate MOOCs are designed along the lines of xMOOCs (structured, sequenced, with a defined start and end), the discussion forum will require participation. Because of its blended nature - formal course content with informal and social learning woven around it - MOOCs cannot be a top down endeavour.
