Tuesday, December 04, 2007 The Smell of Books I cant see myself getting an Amazon Kindle. I like sitting on the couch with a book and a cup of tea, thumbing through the pages, smelling the paper and the ink. But Grafton points out some of the more subtle things that are lost when books are digitized.

Instead of IM''ing each other, we''re talking in person. Rich Sheridan, in his book Joy, Inc. In fact, we found that the built-in barriers between our desks were an impediment because we couldn''t see each other when we spoke, so we recently had them removed.
Im struck by why I find this topic so interesting. And on that note, I think Im pretty much done now with my learning styles assignment. Cognitively, if you’re closer to the interaction, more engaged with the content, it would seem plausible that more would ‘stick’ Particularly compared to a desktop, where you might be distracted by the shiny objects (new messages, whether email, IM, or whatever). But wait, there’s more!

Im a convert. Yes, Im an English major who writes mostly text bullets instead of novels. So Im curious: what drove you to revisit theory? Cammy, Im glad to hear you so revved up. I tried several times to finish Knowles when the book was new. Kept thinking of Dorothy Parker: "The book fills a well-needed gap."
So, what do I do if Im not doing that? Im not such an anal person, so this isnt my favorite thing in the world. I learn what books I need to read, what research I need to track down. Im in that beginner-mind zone. Although Ive been doing this work for 15ish years, the ground beneath me is shaky and I feel like Im in new waters, navigating new people, new processes, new tools. Im suddenly racking up lots of frequent flyer points. When Im actually in town, I work from the shed. Im @cammybean.

For various reasons, Im not going to go back to school to get a Masters Degree in instructional design. But I firmly believe that this journey Im on is giving me the experience and educational equivalent (if not better) than a formal M.Ed.
