Friday, August 24, 2007 Building Community in Second Life: Renaissance Island As you know, Ive been trying to walk-the-talk and experiment a bit with Second Life, role my virtual sleeves up and see what all the fuss is about. I think this is a really interesting story of how spontaneous community happens. Informal learning at its best.
Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. Cammy, Im just a "lite" Facebook user, but I have seen profile pages that list their workplaces with commentary about how horrible their company is, or how much they hate their job. And Im in complete agreement.
Because I could use them as I wish, for whatever I wish, without long-term commitments and with the extra bonus of a community of professionals that use, extend and support them. Resources authored in eXe can be exported in IMS Content Package, SCORM 1.2, or IMS Common Cartridge formats or as simple self-contained web pages.

Im excited to go to as many sessions as I can. Im excited to pick peoples brains. And Im wondering if Im missing something really cool.

It also makes me think of the whole gift-giving economy which is central to BurningMan , an arts festival and community that is created every year in the Nevada desert.
