This past week on LinkedIn I wrote about four trailblazers in the early days of the industry, learningsystems – and what made them special (one has since hit speed bump), and four who trailblazed and then hit a major speed bump into, well, lost their way. Skillsoft – Dominated the course/content marketplace.
Lots of sales should be profitable; acquisitions aren’t the play here (some vendors over-extend themselves OR are purchased by another vendor expecting higher returns, and it fails to deliver – SumTotal and the Skillsoft marriage, anyone?). They think a software company is the same as a learningsystem in terms of the tech angle.
Companies such as Blackboard, CBT Systems — now Skillsoft — Saba and Docent were born. Today’s educational startups serve both video-based content with ease and have the benefit of nearly 10 years of learning in collaboration software, online assessment software and high bandwidth access behind them.

The PDFs, slideshows and online test forms that once drove the e-learning story have become more dynamic with the advent of videos, webinars and discussion forums.
