DevLearn was different this year. It was fully online, called the “DevLearn Digital Experience” (DDX). Engaging Learners with Video: Passive and Active Engagement Strategies by Matthew Pierce. These are my live blogged notes from the opening session at this year's DevLearn, hosted by the eLearning Guild and happening in Las Vegas. During the recent Articulate User event at Devlearn, Sarah Hodge from SlideSugar shared a really cool example that she built in Storyline. She incorporated the 3D models from PowerPoint to create videos that she added to her e-learning course. She also included a quick tutorial to show how she built it.

Realizing many of these tasks potentially save computer users a lot of time and aggravation, I decided to also share these online via very brief videotutorials within the organizations Intranet. The tutorials have been well received and I have decided to also make similar tutorials available to the general public.
In these three tutorials, I’ll give a quick overview on how to create simple, viable illustrated characters using AI. There are a lot of videos on YouTube and elsewhere on getting consistent characters. The video below walks through some of these tips, and we look at options in terms of unique styles and characters.

DevLearn is like being a kid in a candy store…for training and learning techies like us. Pretty soon the only place you’ll be able to find printed tutorial’s and self-help manuals will be in museums. The technologies include interactive guidance tools, training videos , animated tutorials, face-to-face software tutorials etc.
I’ve just finished a number of workshops and capped it off with a session at Devlearn. I don’t have a large budget or a lot of time, but I’d like to use more video in my courses. Years ago producing video was expensive and labor-intensive. Today, many of us have smart phones to record and even edit video.
Something simple like a form-based process interaction can be built in minutes and can be media rich using up-to-date images and video from the field. With the script now 1/3 complete and with a session agreed at the eLearning Guild's DevLearn 2007 in San Jose in November, my mind is turning to how I can convert this script into a half-decent piece of e-learning to show all those folks who come along to take a look.
