The discussion with this trainer made me think of several recent conversations I’ve had with Dashe & Thomson clients. The costs of health and retirement benefits are running high. Businesses are increasingly organizing around shorter-term projects.
Some of these discussions about tools is similar to the arguments that the main stream media has made about blogs and wikis. But Im not sure I can get people to hold their answers back. Ive noticed this same polarization a little bit with some of the discussion around instructional designers with advanced degrees.
Sometimes you need to discuss terms together and come to common understanding of meanings. We did this for the Cultural Competence course, discussing how “racism&# would be defined for the class. IM can be useful for building relationships b/c the expectations for spelling and language aren’t so formal.
Common Cartridge is a standard created by the by the IMS Global Learning Consortium that allows digital content and assessments to be bundled together in a package and then imported into a Learning Management System. Tweet chats, telephone conversations, IMs, coffee time discussions – any and all of these can be micro-learning. Appraisals and feedback need not be a painful and somewhat useless discussion occurring twice a year far removed from the time of the incidences. An email with a few lines of instruction is micro-learning.
So Im going to try to mix it up a bit. Im still smiling. But Im wearing a different purple shirt. I should also show you pictures of me where Im not smiling. Although Im professional, I do have many faces. Usually, Im the one with the camera. I do, indeed, often look like that. But thats just one view.
