Identifies SCORM version/edition (may be multiple), AICC (if applicable) or PENS (if applicable): PENS was created by AICC in 2005, but a few vendors are starting to utilize it this year. A few vendors have this area filled in, might be regarding their site, greater details about their product or features. SCORM or AICC.
It isn’t, but there are a few vendors starting to add it to their interoperability standards and yes a few LMS vendors too. PENS was created in 2005 by AICC as a new interoperability standard. E-Learning 24/7. You may have heard of it and thought to yourself – wow, this must be something brand new.
Same thing with PENS i.e. a SCORM LMS that does not support PENS will not work with a PENS content authoring tool. My business web site is [link] and provides advisory services to e-learningvendors and individuals interested in e-learning products, solutions & services. it will not work.
Right now, you have to upload the course as you would with your SCORM wrapper, where you self-upload or use the course within an online mobile platform from your authoring tool vendor. Just as you can with PENS authoring tools and the systems that support PENS (i.e with TinCan).
no SCORM, AICC or PENS – however, I am now seeing a few vendors offer PENS (created by AICC back in 2005, but slowly gaining traction). There are quite a few vendors in this space, but IMO the best one is dominKnow’s Claro. Non compliant – i.e Peer review.
Lots of ILT vendors – again, the show has always been geared towards this, so no surprise, in fact, ATD formally known as ASTD has always been heavy on ILT and book things, and just in the last few years has seen a major increase in e-learningvendors, with the past show being nearly 50% – the highest ever.
For those of uninitiated, Online Educa Berlin, is an e-learning conference geared towards higher education and with some corporate. If you are an e-learningvendor in the higher education space and doing or planning on doing business in Europe, this is the place to be. Lots of pens. And yes, yes it was.
SCORM compliance and/or AICC – there are tools out there who support neither – but that is not the norm and there are a few tools out there who also support PENS. Multiple learning paths or branching. Screen capture. Works with LMSs – exclusion – proprietary based content tools.
What about PENS or some other compliance standard? Unless you must have PENS or one of the other compliance standards, it is not needed. PENS was created by AICC as an alternative to SCORM 2004, 3rd edition. . If you purchased an AICC only, then you have to find a system that is AICC compliant. Certificates/Certification.
E-mail notification – becoming very common. Most tend to be proprietary, but I have seen a few that are SCORM/AICC and yes even PENS. After creating the courses they stay within the system, they cannot be outputted into a learning platform or system (standard, but guess what? Include some very basic analytical data.

One vendor has a gaming raceway for quizzes. I remember pushing my pen around my paper in junior high creating a race game too. Another vendor includes a FAQ under gamification – why not give everyone a free rock with that? True, but what they are calling gamification is not gamification. .
SCORM/AICC/PENS/IMS. Built in course authoring tool – gaining steam – some are now moving to a partnership with a 3rd party course authoring tool – Personally, I’d rather use my own 3rd party authoring tool than one built in. Facility management. Ad-hoc reporting – i.e. you create your own custom reports.
Freebies from the vendors. Anyway, pens seemed to be the common item. I honestly cannot recall a vendor who had a good giveaway. E-Learning 24/7. Tagged: e-learningvendors , trade shows , UK , WOLC. If you are a marathon walker, then the time to get there would be ideal for you.
You want a system that has e-commerce that accepts PayPal, can generate invoices and track sales - pickings are limited – specifically because of the “generate invoices” and “track sales” You desire a system that offers PENS - Choices are dropping like flies after you whack them with your fly swatter or newspaper.
The latter is slowly gaining speed, which is an advantage to LMS vendors who have a CAT in their own product – which is SCORM,PENS/IMS compliant. Over 98% of the LMS/LCMS/learning platform have at least one compliance standard, so why use a RCAT that doesn’t? proprietary, along with SCORM, etc.,
