So the PLE conversation has been, for me, framed in terms of the LMS and tools. How do you make an LMS into a PLE? And it started dawning on me that the PLE was about a revolution in learning -- about teaching people to learn -- about empowering individuals to take control of their own learning environments, their futures.
First off, I have to say that this entire PLE conversation hasnt really sparked much for me. Maybe it was even "personal learning" before the term PLE came along. I dont see a traditional corporation every truly embracing the theme of PLE -- at least in the pure sense of the term "personal". It just seems like a no-duh.

There has been a lot of talk recently about PLEs (Personal Learning Environments) and everyone it seems, wants to know what they are, what they contain, or if they will replace current institutional VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) or LMS (Learning Management System) provision. No one seems to be able to agree on what a PLE is.
Content creation is an important feature in many personal learning environment (PLE) models, and together with organising and sharing, makes up the cardinal triumvirate of skills that provides learners with a clear advantage. In my next blog post in this series on digital literacies, I will explore this facet of the social web in more detail.
Creating, organising and sharing content within a defined community of interest is the way forward, and all of these are achievable through social media. I have previously outlined my views on what a personal learning environment should contain - it's functional components, or the anatomy and physiology of a PLE. Every learner has one.
You don't of course, but you can bypass a lot of the awkward social manoeuvring you often experience when you meet someone for the first time. And it has been quite intensive, with research workshops, seminars and project work from morning through to late afternoon, followed by social events around the city and beyond. We were all excited about the potential of PLEs, their subversive nature and their inherent informality.
I first met Alec Couros among that amazing gathering of people at the inaugural PLE (Personal Learning Environment) conference in Barcelona, in 2010. Alec is Professor of educational technology at the University of Regina in Canada. When you hear Alec speak you realise just how passionate he is about openness in education.
I first met Graham at an event in the UK around 2006, just when I was becoming aware of the potential of social media such as wikis, blogs and social networking platforms as a learning tools. He has some radical things to say about education, and he isn't always popular.
Today, we keep hearing that formal presentations are out, that it’s all about informal learning, social learning and user-generated content. User tagging is an important aspect of sharing content that many social media tools promote. But as we all know, learning is evolving.
