Apparently, an acquaintance challenged my colleague Harold Jarche’s Personal Knowledge Mastery (PKM) model. So, I’ve talked about PKM before , but I want to elaborate. Here’s my take on the case for PKM. PKM integrates different frameworks, and creates a practical approach. That’s hard to test.
Sense-making with PKM. PKM is a set of problem-solving skills for work, focused on getting things done but not necessarily task focused. A PKM Method. Other models for PKM. Challenge & Evaluate. PKM is very much individualized process–we have to figure out how to make sense of things. Participate.
I’m a fan of Harold Jarche’s Seek-Sense-Share (SSS) model for Personal Knowledge Mastery (PKM). Now, the model of self-regulated learning I was reading about talks about personal goals, learning actions, and evaluation. Similarly, the results of personal sensing and the feedback from sharing inform the evaluation.
Idea Management and Design, that sounds close to what I know as Personal Knowledge Management (PKM). After reading a few lines from the MSLOC430 blog it really does sound like PKM. Filtering – how do you evaluate ideas to find the most promising or innovative. Do you see the relationship to PKM? Learning From Others.
Cathy Moore has Action Mapping, Harold Jarche has PKM, Con Gottfredson has the 5 moments of need, and so on. The first thing is to establish credibility. Which means demonstrating that you track and promote the right stuff. . Some folks have created a model that they tout. Another approach like this is owning a particular domain.
L&D will transform organizations to become “social” organizations by facilitating PKM and community management. This requires a holistic L&D strategy and a set of new L&D roles and skills. Communities, conversations, and colleagues connected via mobile devices, social tools, and the web will be the keys to learning.
Harold Jarche’s PKM is a good start, talking about seek > sense > share. And how to evaluate what you get. If we evaluate our learnings and apply the ones that are improvements, we’re innovating. What are learning to learn skills? Nor do our organizations. But we could.
They are using various tools for PKM ( Personal Knowledge Management ) and taking onus of their own learning. Refer to Harold Jarche’ blog for a deeper understanding of PKM. Measures for evaluating the impact of a MOOC on employee performance will need to be thought through and directly linked to the organizational goals and vision.'
I also am finding myself ever more convinced that we are discussing basically the same thing being discussed in PKM circles and even some overlap with productivity.
Thus, w orking out loud is intrinsically linked to two critical aspects of becoming a good learner -- Personal knowledge Management (PKM) and building one''s Personal Learning Network (PLN). Sharing purposefully implies making my work visible as not only an end outcome but also the messy processes and thinking that goes behind it.
This is very much based on Harold Jarche’s Seek-Sense-Share model for Personal Knowledge Mastery (PKM). We shouldn’t assume good research skills, and assist individuals in doing understanding what qualifies as good searches for input and evaluating the hits, as well as establishing and filtering existing information streams.
The table below captures the shifts as I see it: I have been writing about social and collaborative learning, the importance of communities of practices and networked learning skills like building one’s PLN and PKM for some time now. Look at how the newspaper industry has transformed or the film industry for that matter.
It has helped me to develop my personal learning network (PLN) and enabled my PKM. Working out loud enables us to practice and hone skills like reflection, synthesis, evaluation, online collaboration, co-creation and so on. I am a huge believer of the practice because I have experienced the effect first hand.

Prepare for future "unknown" skills - This is a tricky one that most organizations steer clear of.

Course facilitators and participants will analyze the research literature and evaluate it against their own experience with the intent of developing a comprehensive understanding of personal learning environments and networks. Though billed as a course, it’s not the sort of course you’re used to. They also give good show.
If you can't share while in the flow of work, taking 10~15 mins at the end of the day to quickly share a snippet will enforce a habit of reflection, synthesis and evaluation -- all very handy personal learning skills. It is important to initially set aside some time each day to evaluate and articulate one's learning till it becomes a habit.

Curating these items — selecting, organizing, evaluating, and sharing them widely — multiplies an organization’s return on information many times over. Harold’s PKM is a set of individually constructed processes to help each of us make sense of our world and work more efficiently. PKM provides a framework for becoming knowledgeable.
The up-front analysis and the evaluation components allow me to flex my analytical muscles.
