With technology advancing quickly, many businesses and organisations now use VLEs to create flexible and accessible learning experiences for people of all ages. The primary purpose of a VLE is to make learning easier, no matter where learners are. Another benefit of VLEs is collaborative learning.
I was surprised by the concerns expressed in the recent HE Forum about VLE’s leading to reduced attendance. The question posted was:- Using a VLE might lead to a reduction in attendance. And so an emailed was circulated to a national list, not by myself I must add, to see if this is generally seen as a problem.
My own presentation came under the theme of transforming teaching and learning and featured a recent trial that I conducted with level 4 students in an attempt to realise the Social Constructive potential of Moodle as a VLE.
• Provide your learners with a forum to ask questions and to learn from one another. The forum may be synchronous or asynchronous, or both. • Develop an informal VLE to centralise all the resources. • Encourage the learner to integrate the VLE into a broader PLE. • Encourage discovery learning.
I was asked this week to provide a short session on using our Moodle vle for the for our end of year Teaching and Learning Conference here at the College. As you will have read from other posts on this blog I am taking every opportunity to provide the widest expose possible for Wimba Create this academic year, so the second half is sorted.
Since I first began to make use of the Moodle vle here at college one of the activities that I bought into very early was the use of Forums. So how about your own use of forums?
sessions for our Moodle vle. Of all the aspects in using the vle that we covered today -Forums and Chat seemed to attract the most enthusiasm and time, all very good, and often amusing. I think I could a make tentative assumption from this that for many staff the idea of training during term time is still difficult to manage.
Just into a new round of vle training in Moodle. The problem appeared to be that if staff were slow to take up use of the vle fairly soon following the training, they seemed to loose confidence and I found them returning to the course again the next term or later. We have now completed the rollout and trials.
Migration, Migration As part of the college merger project, the Christmas break has been used to migrate Orpington College Moodle vle away from hosting with ULCC and onto our own internal servers, a move that involved a change from unix/Linux to Windows.
One of the VLE training courses that I run here at the college, Moodle Web 2.0, introduces those features that are part of the standard build such as Chat, Forums, Glossaries, Blogs and RSS. The reason for this is two fold.
If you have been following this blog, then you will have read that last year marked the start of a new rollout strategy for our Moodle vle to staff at the college. Of course we shall always need to retain an introductory course for new staff, but this will now be running in parallel with our phase 2 course.
Discussion Forum. Learning through experience which can be achieved in eLearning via simulations, interactive videos , discussion forums, reflections, branched scenarios, active tasks, and opportunities to apply learning. Threads refer to a series of posts on an online discussion forum relating to a particular topic.
But then David me asked a probing follow-up question… yes, it can be used as personal message board, but is that good for education when we have a VLE for that kind of activity? To which I replied… Ah, from an edu perspective: Twitter is a real-time peer-to-peer knowledge sharing forum…? Participate!
3) Your Managed Learning Environment (or VLE) - in whatever flavour your organisation has chosen - is a walled garden that allows conversations to be protected from outside eyes. However, bear in mind that most VLEs have online discussion threads that all of the group can see and read.

However, LAMS does not attempt to replicate the course administration functionality of a typical LMS/VLE/CMS. Their particular implementation of voting, forum, questions, chat, surveys, wiki, etc. Very interesting concept. The providers I've listed seem to say, we'll provide you all the tools that you can compose into your blend.

Course management systems, virtual learning environments (VLE) and learning management systems (LMS) all offer things that are similar in premise, but very different in reality. With the platform, delivery and access of learning being so crucial , the marketplace is vast with hundreds of possible solutions out there.
Features like automated reminders for deadlines, discussion forums, and online submission portals can save time and keep students on track. Technology can significantly enhance time management for both educators and students. Effective use of the Learning Management System can streamline course administration and communication.
The ILE will contain self-paced, self-directed, unmeasured learning resources such as readings, video clips, podcasts and discussion forums. The FLE might be called a VLE, MLE, LMS, or some other acronym. The ILE might be called a learning portal, a learning centre, or some other friendly moniker.
Occupying a place on the continuum somewhere between a VLE and a PLE, an ILE is an informal learning environment that a facilitator manages on behalf of a group of learners. Not to mention blogs, wikis, discussion forums and social bookmarks. Unlike a VLE, an ILE is strictly informal. No forced navigation, no completion status.
Nearly at the end of the June EdTech Challenge … and with day 28 we’re asked about our ‘golden EdTech oldies’ For me the most standout, as an ‘oldie’ (the presentation, not James) was James Clay and his 2009 ALTC presentation ‘The VLE is dead’: James Clay, 2009 ALTC – The VLE is dead.
The interface is actually so easy to use that if you aren’t careful you can have a blooming, uncontrolled social jungle of blogs, chats and forums before you know it – and find the rest of the internet pouring into your Moodle in places where it isn’t always welcome.
