Me: Im an instructional designer. Im sort of distracted by the naked boy who just ran by (not mine). I find the role of IT trainer works best for me, as my actual role title Systems Learning and Development Designer is a bit of a problem, particularly on forms! I create learning material. I create eLearning.
Learningobjectives clarify exactly what it is youre trying to teach. Ray Sims has written a great summary on Writing LearningObjectives , with citations to some good resources, including Vicki Heaths post LearningObjectives: Writing Learning Outcomes So They Matter. I see the value. How about you?
Do you work in or favor a design shop where each person has his or her own role (ID, graphics, programming, QA)? Atleast in India, as far as I know an elearning division has graphic designers, programmers and Instructional Designers where each of them have their own role to play. Whats your view? I think Im somewhat of an anomaly in the field. Maybe Im not an instructional designer at all. I think my dinosaur status as an instructional designer stems from the fact that Ive always worked for e-Learning vendors where the programming, graphics, and ID are distinct, separate job roles. I dont do any programming.
They often use slick video to show a concept while a voice-over explains everything, so the learners only role is to passively absorb. Im not saying to leave the info a mystery; Im saying that Ive seen a lot of elearning that seems to underestimate the intelligence of the learner and makes every little thing painfully explicit.
An individual can (and normally DO) make use of different personas, i.e. social roles in different situations. Okay, Im stunned there are so many INTJs here since as a general rule, INTJs are only about 5% of population (Im guessing here). Im an INTJ and it says my blog is an ESTP. Im a linear reader in recovery and have been actively learning how to skim books and not feel guilty about it. Lots of practical ideas and examples for turning basic teaching points into learning games -- from casual games to teach facts and concepts, to detailed simulations that teach procedures and problem solving.
