Since I became an active Twitter user a few months ago, the application has grown on me to the point where it’s now far-and-away my favorite social media tool. From its childish name to its complex language of re-tweets and hashtags, many people tend to criticize the application before they try it. And I use the word ‘tool’ for a reason.
Tuesday, July 24, 2007 Im Mrs. Dalloway Im just back from vacation and still trying to make the transition back into work mode. Im disturbed to report that Im The Poisonwood Bible. Cammy Beans Learning Visions Musings on eLearning, instructional design and other training stuff. Not quite there yet. Quite chilling.
Im looking for some input: good examples of software product training. Im working on a pitch to a software company -- technical audience (think database guys). Im not looking to work with another vendor, Im just looking to see good examples of software training to make sure Im not behind the times!
Back to the Google Desktop -- Im playing around a bit with the searching capabilities and am seeing the light. Im struggling a bit with figuring out how to set the preferences so that it searches where I need it to search (I save most of my files to a shared network drive; not locally). So the search feature -- I get that and Im sold.
Im not a techie -- far from it. Im an instructional designer with an emphasis on writing and schmoozing. Google Alerts A nice adjunct to Google Reader; Im always discovering something new via my "instructional design" alert. Im #34 on the list. Google Reader All the news I need to know about e-Learning in one place.
Im going to Maine. As e-Learning strategists and practitioners pushing these cutting edge tools, weve got to make sure that the tools suit the audience. As Cathy Moore suggests, will SL alienate female participants? Should we be looking at alternative virtual worlds such as Protosphere ? Talk amongst yourselves.
Instead, I cracked open Google Analytics and pulled up my top 5 posts for the year (well, my top posts since September 1 when I started using Google Analytics): The Real World, Second Life, and Facebook/MySpace : Over the summer, I conducted a series of interviews with over 20 current college students and recent graduates. All female.
See the intense comment thread on The Real World, Second Life and Facebook/MySpace where Cathy provides some interesting commentary on women in Second Life. As someone who develops corporate elearning, Im simply thrilled! Cathy is a fabulous writer, offering great insight and analysis, along with a delightful sense of humor.
Well, lets just say that theres no denying now that Im almost 40. Wednesday, July 11, 2007 My 100th Post In honor of my 39th birthday (which is today), I write my 100th post (which seems improbable). In fact, I think Ill just start saying that I am 40. This seems significant for no real reason.
Cammy--thanks for the compliment. :-) Im digging the new look and what you did with the banner. Still trying to motivate myself after a week of vacation, I suppose. So -- what do you think? Then again, perhaps Im missing something. Monday, July 02, 2007 The Gin System As Ive been trying to sort out the role of FaceBook lately, I cant help but wonder "wheres the content?" It seems to me that FaceBook is a great networking tool. You can point people to outside links, but I havent yet seen a great way to include content.
Im a Word power-user and love all the little tricks and shortcuts. I started off cutting and pasting a lot of documents from Word into the wiki. Now Ive left Word behind and am writing everything directly in the wiki. Ive had to get used to the formatting -- or lack thereof. I miss them. But the payoff is huge.
Im definitely interested in getting myself in there and would like to arrange a meeting of bloggers, if youre interested. But its on my to-do list for this week (as it has been on my to do list for the last month). What about you? Do you have a Second Life? How often do you access your account? What have you done? But its been low on my list.
I also kept the LibraryThing listing books Im currently reading (or have read or intend to read at some point.), I just deleted a bunch of stuff and/or tried to incorporate it into my About Page. I did keep the Instructional Design Resources list, which seems to be useful to people. as this does get a lot of interest (aka "hits").
The Connected Worker 21st century knowledge worker/learner "Im only as good as my network." Kids use tools like MySpace, FB etc. Shift is not to do what youre supposed to do. Do it when you want. This will have real implications for instruction. Misleading to apply differences solely on basis of generation.
Tuesday, July 10, 2007 The Real World, SecondLife and FaceBook/MySpace Over the past few weeks Ive conducted about 17 interviews with current college students and recent graduates. A couple of people also had MySpace accounts. MySpace is seen as being too "creepy". All women. This is a main way of staying connected to friends.
