Monday, November 05, 2007 Instructional Design Inspiration As I mentioned last week , Im in the midst of designing my first custom eLearning course in quite awhile. Now that Ive been actually doing some writing, Im having to put it all to work. Ideally, Im trying to figure out how to make this a bit interactive.
For various reasons, Im not going to go back to school to get a Masters Degree in instructional design. But I firmly believe that this journey Im on is giving me the experience and educational equivalent (if not better) than a formal M.Ed. Even though Ive been doing this ("instructional design") for over ten years, Im starting over.
So, what do I do if Im not doing that? I use words like "cognitive load theory" or "working memory". Im not such an anal person, so this isnt my favorite thing in the world. And Im really excited about the project Im working on. Im on the fence if I want to get into Instructional Design or be an Eduction Advisor.

Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. Cammy, Im just a "lite" Facebook user, but I have seen profile pages that list their workplaces with commentary about how horrible their company is, or how much they hate their job. And Im in complete agreement.
Im curious what other folks experiences has been. I have also worked with individuals that do have ID degrees, and found found gaps in technical knowledge, but not in their theory. Im so happy to see you post this up. Im struggling with this right now. When my contract is up at the college Im highly unlikely to re-sign.

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 Jott This Blog I havent had so much time lately to blog, as this project Im working on has been quite grueling. I find my best time for thinking up excellent blog entries is late at night when Im lying in bed. That is, of course, if Im even awake after the kids have finally fallen asleep.
I havent signed up anywhere, I havent taken part in any of the sessions, but Im like a moth drawn to the flame: as I peer in on all the conversation beginning to happen, I cant help but join in. Information framed in practical terms, rather than theory. I especially like the part about "avoiding grand theories of learning." greatly appreciate the education Im getting. We used a different approach: The Playground Theory of Learning developed by Shelly Loewen. Ive been looking into the learning styles theory a bit the last few days, after having a humble learning moment. Theories do not help us to expand our awareness and understanding of learning; they serve to reduce and confine it.
You ARE a geek! :-) Whats lighting up my life this week is "Beyond Bullet Points" which Im using to structure the PPT that Im going to use for my webinar on time management next month. Tuesday, June 19, 2007 Using FaceBook Im trying to expand my horizons a bit these days and have been taking a closer look at a whole bunch of tools out there, including SecondLife and FaceBook. Im interested in how we could leverage that existing community for better communication, learning opportunities, networking, etc.
Back to the Google Desktop -- Im playing around a bit with the searching capabilities and am seeing the light. Im struggling a bit with figuring out how to set the preferences so that it searches where I need it to search (I save most of my files to a shared network drive; not locally). So the search feature -- I get that and Im sold.
Im not a techie -- far from it. Im an instructional designer with an emphasis on writing and schmoozing. Google Alerts A nice adjunct to Google Reader; Im always discovering something new via my "instructional design" alert. Im #34 on the list. Google Reader All the news I need to know about e-Learning in one place.
" This adage works for me most of the time as Im designing eLearning courses. Right now, Im feeling like just getting to good would be an achievement. Right now, Im proofing a storyboard thats full of endless text bullets and boring software demos with no interactivity -- and theres really nothing I can do about it.

I have never taken a course in adult learning theory. My current business card says Im a "Manager of Instructional Design". And now Im here -- "Manager of Instructional Design." But at this point, Im here to stay. If youd like to learn more about what Im doing these days, check out my current job description.
Im a believer in this stuff. So I have no expertise in this area -- and perhaps this is really just a note to self to look into this topic more -- but Im just wondering how brain plasticity relates to the recent NIH study out that claims that cognitive ability is mostly developed by adolescence (found via Jay Cross ).

Im wondering if we should be talking about tiers of instructional design. Today Im feeling more like a hazy purple. Im wondering if in the carpentry example if a master carpenter would agree with you? Im sure a master carpenter wouldnt think so highly of the table I were to make should I take on such a project.
In fact, Ive had very little of interest to add to any conversation of late, mostly because Im much more focused on my personal life and the many transitions Im handling there. Hey Cammy--you know me, I think you can always apply the personal to the professional, so Im with Karl that you should blog about the Wii.
