In his webinar titled ‘Learning isn’t what you thought it was’, Jay Cross made a strong case for informallearning. While there doesn’t seem to be any doubt about its popularity in the learning domain, the webinar set me thinking about the possible pros and cons of informallearning.

I often miss webinars. In this largely informallearning environment, the mode of delivery does matter because the decision to participate rests with the individual. In other words, regardless of some people’s preference to read text over watching a video, they’ll learn just fine by watching the video.
They currently do very little e-learning, although they hope to expand their offerings in the future for both internal and external learners. They manage their classroom training and webinars with spreadsheets and email, and they maintain a PDF course catalog that has to be sent to everyone every time they make a change.
As a learning professional, I have been pondering this question a lot. This has included reading some books, attending some webinars, and talking with other learning professionals about how they are making social media work in a learning environment. 3-- Create an Alumni group.
