How to Craft a Thorough RFP when Selecting an LMS. A Request for Proposal (RFP) is an essential document when choosing a Learning Management System (LMS) for your organization. An LMS RFP provides a detailed description of your organization’s needs and expectations and serves as a benchmark for potential providers.
Let’s remember that this way before the instant access to the Internet, albeit by the time I was working on a master’s you could find information via Archie or Jughead (FTP) – you had to be there. It is why vendors get inundated with them, from folks who have never looked at the learningsystem, initially.
The problem today is when you surf the web, you see all these guides written by content marketers, not experts in L&D or training or learningsystems or even e-learning. Always check out the learningsystem, ask the right questions (which is in this guide), drill them. LearningSystem Types.
It’s not a typical word that comes up when you decide to purchase whatever type of learningsystem, whether it is an LMS, LXP, Learning Platform, Talent Development Platform, Employee Dev Platform (a tiny market, but it exists), or whatever a vendor spins their learningsystem as. Yet it is there.

If you are in training, for example, you need to figure it out—not the system. Should you be able to see certain information? Was it designed poorly? What can you see?
Let’s face it – RFI/RFP documents sent over to learningsystem vendors are massive tomes that confuse, challenge and even baffle some vendors. Then you have RFP/RFIs that lack substance. The fact of the matter is nobody loves creating RFP/RFIs. They can be 25 pages. 50 pages, even 100 pages or more.
There is a lot there for types of systems as I have noted before. I can’t forget the joke of micro-learning platforms, ignoring that micro-learning has been around since 2000, every type of learningsystem can do this because it is based solely on how you or whomever creates the courses/content.
