Okay so the name leaves a little bit to be desired, but rest assured that this program is legit. ScreenCast-o-Matic.

If Jing could upload images to Screencast, then Snagit should be able to as well. The Current “Open Source” Solution. When features have this type of cross product appeal they often become “TechSmith open source” projects. Open source projects have leads who watch the project.

Audacity is a free, open-source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds. Jing allows you to capture basic video, animations, and still images, and share them on the web. Easily select any window or region you would like to record, and Jing will capture everything that happens in that area.

It’s open source software, yet actually has some Help documentation. Jing works on both Mac and PC, to capture single pictures or to record video of screen activity. It’s cross-platform, open source and plays most video and audio formats as well as converts files from one format to another. FileZilla.

Instead of creating multiple Jing videos—once I have replicated a bug—I can create one Camtasia recording of my tests, and edit that video to share highlights with developers. While Jing has been my go-to option for quickly responding to questions, Camtasia does seem to offer more polish.
