PKM is therefore the key to successful social learning. PKM is also a key skill of being an effective autonomous learner – as we can see from the many individuals who are already organizing and managing their own personal learning strategies in the organization – and consequently a key aspect of BYOL (Bring Your Own Learning).
In April 2011 Forrester Research estimated that 47% of users were self-provisioning technology and expected the number to rise to 60% by end 2011, and Jensen & Kline (around the same time) estimated that between 1/3 and 2/3 of employees were meeting their needs by working around L&D). It’s important because research over the past 40 years at least has indicated that learning that occurs outside of formal classes and courses is not only more frequent but also generally more effective than its structured and ‘managed’ counterpart. Why is this important? Performance support comes in many forms.
This is much like all the discussion around personal productivity tools, but in this case it is more focused on research oriented work that requires learning as a component of the activity.
What has to kick in here is a shared belief in a vision/mission that you can get behind, individuals equipped to solve problems collaboratively (what I call big L learning: research, design, experimentation, etc), and tools to hand for working together. And 21st century skills aren’t taken for granted but identified and developed.
Tools to Make Reading & Research More Effective. This sounds a lot like a personal learning environment, personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal work and learning environment (PWLE) and PIM.
