Tuesday, February 12, 2008 Theory vs. Application in Instructional Design: One Academics View A long time ago, I decided I was much better at the practical side of things than the theoretical. in high school, which involved solving problems like figuring out the volume of weird spaces. Im still a really hands-on person.
Im losing my steam, but trying to stay somewhat on target. So go ahead and "Email or IM another blogger in your niche to introduce yourself and your blog". I want to share as much as I can about projects Im working on. Im not sure Ill bother with that. Im not sure if it does much for a site with minimal traffic.

If I notice Im losing someones attention in class, Ill instantly make direct eye-contact, maybe raise an eyebrow, and start talking directly to that student, and most of the time. I think the problem here is not with learning styles, but with the attempt to match the teaching to a particular style. If youre providing SMEs with the templates, Im not sure theyll be altering them. Im not saying there is no place for templates (honestly!), So what Im saying is, we can work with SMEs -- use templates as a starting point -- and still hope to create good learning experiences. Im a linear reader in recovery and have been actively learning how to skim books and not feel guilty about it. Lots of practical ideas and examples for turning basic teaching points into learning games -- from casual games to teach facts and concepts, to detailed simulations that teach procedures and problem solving. The more I get into this field the more I realize how big a problem (if you can call it that) it is to create the right learning for the student, but still appease the person thats ultimately paying you. Im interested to see what responses you might get.

A really common problem is to dump a lot of info into a course that would be more useful outside the course, searchable on the intranet or included in help files or even just printed on a card that learners can look at.
