Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). In addition, IMS has released a specification for activity very much like xAPI, called Caliper. There are background issues as well.
The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard. A predecessor to SCORM, AICC was difficult to work with and many steps were required to get content in the format running in a learning management system (LMS). FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions).
AICC goes after the same thing as what I've described above for SCORM (tracking under an LMS). Most of the time, it's to handle cross-domain issues, i.e., learning content is on different server than learning management. Note: ARIADNE, AICC, IEEE LTSC, and IMS all participate in ADL's work on SCORM).
The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. Thus, they were able to come together despite competition.
This centralized approach mitigates risk and helps to avoid any potential regulatory compliance issues. Content Integration and Interoperability: Learning management systems should support learning content packaged according to interoperable standards such as SCORM, AICC and xAPI (formerly Tin Can).
eLearning past: AICC. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. That’s also evident from the fact that the AICC specification hasn’t been updated in over ten years.
SCORM/AICC/PENS/IMS. Those that don’t are due to: Your tool works only with SCORM 2004 3rd edition, and your LMS only accepts AICC. Just because the LMS looks good on the main page, some will have issues when you are taking the courses. The same issue happens in the states. Facility management. A: Nearly all.
AICC/SCORM/IMS. However, I had an issue with BlueVolt’s training catalog-classes-resources, which I found some redundancy that was not needed. Education System of the Year. itslearning. When I saw how you could customize the front end for K-6, I feel in love. From a feature standpoint the product is slick. SIS integration.
Developing a training solution to address these issues will require specifying the details of the training needed to bring about the desired changes. In addition to the issues involved with the deployment of the technology and the acceptance by the client, there are also issues surrounding transition of ownership and control.
AICC and Tin Can API. Pros: Compatible with SCORM and AICC. Compatible with SCORM, AICC, IMS LTI, and xAPI/Tin Can API. Compatible with SCORM, AICC, xAPI/Tin Can API. Pros: Compatible with SCORM, AICC and xAPI/Tin Can API. Compatible with SCORM, AICC and xAPI/Tin Can API.
The obvious point here is that due to assessment, certification, and regulatory issues, training content will still require formal development processes. In order for social media platforms to totally eclipse the function an LMS plays, they would be forced to support interoperability standards like SCORM, AICC or Common Cartridge.
