Me: Im an instructional designer. Im sort of distracted by the naked boy who just ran by (not mine). If I see they still have that blank look in their eyes, I quickly mention the names of some of my clients and that usually gets there attention enough to explain further. Just as water will always find its own level by the path of least resistance, individual learners, working in collaboration and unhampered by the precepts of authority, tend to do an excellent job of finding and sharing what they need to know efficiently and effectively, even if they don’t necessarily know what they are looking for to begin with.

Weve taken scenario-based approaches, so the learner can sit with an expert and watch how he does his job using the software. Short demos (some with practice) linked right from the software itself.
Anytime a new thing comes out its described as "revolutionary" - its going to change the way we do things. Instructional designers can take the tools and create a good learning experience or not. Doesnt change the basic model of an expert/teacher delivering to a group of learners. Its been around for a long time. 1980s CD ROMS.

Monday, November 05, 2007 Instructional Design Inspiration As I mentioned last week , Im in the midst of designing my first custom eLearning course in quite awhile. Now that Ive been actually doing some writing, Im having to put it all to work. Ideally, Im trying to figure out how to make this a bit interactive. Take the Survey!
One real problem is corporate fear of social networking tools. Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. So Im not sure the issue is people leaking secret information, but maybe just companies afraid of being bad-mouthed. And Im in complete agreement.
Heres a taste of whats on my plate right now: Lots of Software Trai ning Finishing up a big project update for a large financial institution. Wrapping up software training for another client. More just-in-time performance support tools; "hey, how do I do that?" Im a convert. Im still of that mindset.

Im excited to go to as many sessions as I can. Im excited to pick peoples brains. And Im wondering if Im missing something really cool.
So, what do I do if Im not doing that? Write all the design documents, project plans, change orders, etc. Im not such an anal person, so this isnt my favorite thing in the world. Tuesday, March 25, 2008 Jott This Blog I havent had so much time lately to blog, as this project Im working on has been quite grueling. I find my best time for thinking up excellent blog entries is late at night when Im lying in bed. That is, of course, if Im even awake after the kids have finally fallen asleep.
Im in that beginner-mind zone. Although Ive been doing this work for 15ish years, the ground beneath me is shaky and I feel like Im in new waters, navigating new people, new processes, new tools. Im suddenly racking up lots of frequent flyer points. When Im actually in town, I work from the shed. Im @cammybean.
So, in the interest of trying to be more of a geek and trying to play hard with all the new tools that are out there, I went ahead and installed it. Back to the Google Desktop -- Im playing around a bit with the searching capabilities and am seeing the light. So the search feature -- I get that and Im sold. Very useful feature.

For various reasons, Im not going to go back to school to get a Masters Degree in instructional design. But I firmly believe that this journey Im on is giving me the experience and educational equivalent (if not better) than a formal M.Ed. Even though Ive been doing this ("instructional design") for over ten years, Im starting over.
Im not talking about the quantity of my friends, but rather the breadth and depth. Im not sure if there was a specific tipping point for me, but I was certainly amused when one of my friends informed me that Im personally responsible for making her waste more time on Facebook than she ever thought possible. Think Uggs.
And this is definitely not one of those things that Im learning for the first time, but here goes: Motivation is everything! Im primed and ready. I agree--totally cool and Im not even the proud mama! Id go so far as to say that Ive reinvented myself as a learning professional. Connecting with other people creates motivation.
