The latest Big Questio n on the ASTD Learning Circuits blog is designed to set the agenda for discussion over the coming months. The question is: What issues and trends do you think are having a major impact on the industry—and should be on the hot list for the blog to tackle? Will a two-day course be enough?
But when I do these predictions, I focus on the stuff that’s part of the bigger trends and the potential that these trends have for impacting workplace learning professionals especially around the impact that technology will have. And probably will get some more ideas from the BigQuestion - Predictions and Plans for 2010.
ASTD's BigQuestion this month (March) is actually two questions and since I helped Tony Karrer tweak the question a bit, I feel I must offer some type of answer (plus I aways enjoy the discussion around the BigQuestion.)
The BigQuestion this month are Predictions for Learning in 2008. Here are my predictions, but realistically they are more about trends in eLearning and eLearning Software. And because it ties directly to metrics that matter to the business, this will get significant attention during the year. during 2008.

That’s a trend in Silicon Valley to just be totally transparent. I know that’s a bigquestion, but… Michael Short: Yeah, yeah. Sometimes I listen to podcasts where people in the SaaS space, in my niche, in training and coaching, and stuff like that, they share all their numbers and everything like that.
But the bigquestion is, what virtual classroom software is right for your goals? Noticing a trend with SfB? In my experience, this is a smart way to encourage learners to remain attentive during recordings. The time has come to move your training programs forward into an interactive virtual classroom.
The second half of the prediction “self directed learning” got less attention during the year than I anticipated, but it was there and certainly was a big part of the discussion around social and informal learning. We even made the BigQuestion one month: New Presenter and Learner Skills and Methods.
This month's #LCBQ is the first with the BigQuestion Thought Leaders. Lots of discussion and debate around interesting questions for eLearning professionals. Virtual classrooms and smart-boards are used in a more student-centered way (not putting all the attention to one person up-front=bad).
I personally believe that traditional training as publishing is on an overall downward trend. I've talked with enough VPs of Training and CEOs of Training Companies to know that this is a hard problem that definitely has their attention. I am planning to hold a discussion through Learn Trends around this topic in July.
