Me: Im an instructional designer. Im sort of distracted by the naked boy who just ran by (not mine). billbrandon had this comment on Twitter: I usually just tell em Im a writer. Im comforted to know that Im not the only one who receives blank stares or gets tongue-twisted in trying to describe what I do.
Just as water will always find its own level by the path of least resistance, individual learners, working in collaboration and unhampered by the precepts of authority, tend to do an excellent job of finding and sharing what they need to know efficiently and effectively, even if they don’t necessarily know what they are looking for to begin with.

Weve taken scenario-based approaches, so the learner can sit with an expert and watch how he does his job using the software. Short demos (some with practice) linked right from the software itself.
Anytime a new thing comes out its described as "revolutionary" - its going to change the way we do things. Instructional designers can take the tools and create a good learning experience or not. Doesnt change the basic model of an expert/teacher delivering to a group of learners. Its been around for a long time. 1980s CD ROMS.

One real problem is corporate fear of social networking tools. Im no Facebook super-user and I havent experienced a huge time suck from it, but I suppose its possible. So Im not sure the issue is people leaking secret information, but maybe just companies afraid of being bad-mouthed. And Im in complete agreement.

The IMS Global Learning Consortium has announced the release latest version of the IMS Learning Tools Interoperability Specification – Version 1.1. This is a big change, and a welcome one. Blackboard, for example, provides a rich set of tools; however, they only work on Blackboard.

Wednesday, September 19, 2007 My Online Visual Identity When Michele Martin changed her profile picture the other day, I realized I was a bit disoriented. So Im going to try to mix it up a bit. Ive changed my profile picture in a few of my online places. Im still smiling. But Im wearing a different purple shirt.
Im in that beginner-mind zone. Although Ive been doing this work for 15ish years, the ground beneath me is shaky and I feel like Im in new waters, navigating new people, new processes, new tools. Tuesday, June 19, 2007 Using FaceBook Im trying to expand my horizons a bit these days and have been taking a closer look at a whole bunch of tools out there, including SecondLife and FaceBook. Im interested in how we could leverage that existing community for better communication, learning opportunities, networking, etc.
So, in the interest of trying to be more of a geek and trying to play hard with all the new tools that are out there, I went ahead and installed it. Back to the Google Desktop -- Im playing around a bit with the searching capabilities and am seeing the light. So the search feature -- I get that and Im sold. Very useful feature.
