As an instructional designer/eLearning professional, what books are the essential tools in your reference library ? Im not looking for the obtuse theory books. Im already feeling a bit overwhelmed. Im about halfway through Michael Allens new book, Designing Successful E-Learning. I prefer the get-down-and-dirty variety.

Now a few of Karl Kapps students "(Nicole Clark, Heather Gee, Aaron Kennelly and David Robbins) have created a fun little assessment tool called Gamer Rater that helps you determine what level of gamer you are according to Games, Gadgets and Gizmos for Learning. Im so pleased.
Many instructional designers ( Christy Tucker , Wendy Wickham ) build their own courses using tools like Captivate. Reuben on the downside of rapid e-Learning tools: The emergence of "easy-to-use" authoring tools, however, has tempted us to believe that the instructional designer can do it all! I know of companies who only hire instructional designers and buy Rapid elearning tools and expect the ID to do it all themselves to reduce the cost and over head of hiring graphic designers as well. But I know of few variable cases too: 1.
With the rise of rapid eLearning tools and the ease with which virtually anyone can now create a course, whats changing for the instructional designer? Consider this part two of my response to the Learning Circuits BigQuestion for February: Instructional Design - If, When and How Much? SMEs using rapid eLearning tools)?
Of course, you need the right tools -- accurate measuring spoons and cups, and the right ingredients. And it works best when you know your tools and your ingredients. Sometimes you just follow the recipe -- perhaps using a rapid eLearning Template tool and a solid ISD model. Muffins, spaghetti sauce, cookies, yum. Even a rat.
This hasnt gotten onto my radar before -- Im not sure if there are any state-funded online programs in Massachusetts. Within higher ed, Im sure well continue to see growth in online, but it is starting to plateau a bit. Im with Stephen that we need different kinds of learning options for different kids and different needs.

My solution to resolving this could be to do something like declaring " bookmark bankruptcy " but I dont feel like doing that; instead, Im going to hold a blog-a-thon. I do much better when Im under public pressure so Im putting myself under the gun to produce between 5 and 10 blog posts a day for the next 30 days.
