Blackboard still rules the day. Blackboard… Still? Despite all the new entrants into the learning management space, Blackboard still has a stranglehold on the LMS industry. I can’t help but wonder if it is just a matter of time until Blackboard swoops in for the buy-out. Industry Needs Blackboard.
How do colleges, universities and companies migrate from learning management systems like Blackboard Vista or WebCT to Moodle ? For many organizations looking to do away with licensing costs and other issues associated with commercial LMS products, this can be a technically challenging and potentially expensive process.

Today BlackBoard announced plans to merge with WebCT; the two leading providers in the higher education eLearning space (BlackBoard alone forecasts US$150M+ for their fiscal year). It also doesn't bode well for WebCT's willingness to play with open source (sorry Harold!)

LMS' like WebCT, Blackboard, and Desire2Learn offer their greatest value to the organization by providing a means to sequence content and create a manageable structure for instructors/administration staff. WebCT and Blackboard have recently formed partnerships with synchronous tools to allow for easy integration across platforms.
My question is, what am I not getting that I would with Blackboard, WebCT, FirstClass and other VLEs? What would I get by upping the investment to tens of thousands of pounds, dollars or whatever.
For example, larger learning institutions like universities and colleges will probably opt for a service is Blackboard or WebCT. Blackboard – Definitely a very early entrant into the EdTech space. WebCT was a direct competitor back then, but BB was far better. EdTech driver, whose impact started to appear in the late 90s. Sure it looks like the system never evolved for EdTech, and their impact in corporate system-wise needs well an overhaul.
Generally speaking, Learning Management Systems like WebCT or Blackboard are used for larger educational institutions like colleges or universities, while LMS’s like the one we offer are used more by individual course sellers.
Popular ones included Lotus Notes, Blackboard and WebCT. It still has a way to go, but it is happening – and happening faster than its corporate counterpart. As for the systems people used, well it varied. For the masses, it wasn’t all sunshine. After all, classroom learning was the best way, the only way.
