SumTotal – Get ready for a new UI for the learning module. It is a mass improvement compared to their current learning UI. Speaking of SumTotal, as you may or may not be aware any of their modules can be purchased as a standalone or any combination. If you are looking for a soft skills learning game this is it.
If a vendor didn’t visibly list it, then upon asking, many said they were going to include it. SumTotal is coming out with a new UI for their learning module in August. I can tell you it is way better than their current learning UI. Speaking of SumTotal, whoever showed me the product should get a raise!
A linked feature story in the update that immediately caught my eye was titled " Best Practices for Creating Mobile Learning Content " and clicking that link shuttled me over to SumTotal's corporate web site where I registered to download their latest mobile-related white paper. Come on, SumTotal!
Q : I am curious on why Cornerstone On Demand, Saba and SumTotal do not appear in your top twenty lists even though they appear on other sites as the best products in the market. I always hear “I’m looking at SumTotal, CoD, Expertus”, when folks mention it to me. So, back for another installment.
SumTotal is calling their product a Human Capital Management system. Sure, they offer a separate LMS called SumTotal Maestro, but their TM has surprisingly (not really) been morphed into a HCM, will others follow? And now a brief announcement: Shocking news! Oh wait, others were starting the trend.
If you are someone who is considering some of the bigger dogs like Cornerstone or SumTotal, I would seriously look at these guys. eLogic Learning ($$-$$$) – Another solid performer who continues to get better and better. E-Learning 24/7. Personally, I think they crush the monsters of midway aka CoD et al.
SumTotal: Expensive system and what you are buying is name IMO. Personally, this is a human capital management system which has a learning component. . Saba: See SumTotal. Two separate platforms and what I have been told by a source that really are nowhere close to having some type of interface.

This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . In all the years I have attended and have known about ATD (formally ASTD), this year is by far the most in terms of e-learningvendors, especially those in the LMS space.
If this is something you are looking for – i.e. a HCM, then they are the ones to go with – over Cornerstone, Oracle-Taleo, SumTotal and alike. Their product is more geared towards a human capital management system, especially with the BizX Suite. The user interface has come a long way.

I am still hearing of problems with Captivate 5 and SumTotal. Hopefully, SumTotal will release an update to solve this. The issue is caused by the fact that Captivate supports only Actionscript 3. As a result of this issue, people have to insert the SWF as a web object.

I saw a lot more folks than in previous shows and more e-learningvendors too. Equally there were several ILT vendors who had some type of online learning thing going on. One person I chatted with, told me that to get some information, the vendor decided to verify/assess whether this person was a candidate.
People often ask me why I seem to dog the big players in the space, ala SumTotal, Cornerstone and alike. I’d rather have a vendor who charges me 20K for 1,000 users than one who charges me 70K or more. If they can’t meet your deadline, do you really want them as a your provider? More expensive means better features.
GeoLearning’s Maestro product is now called SumTotal Maestro. Vendors can post a demo of their LMS, up to five minutes in length. These guys are always leaders in the authoring tool space, and their mLearning studio rocks – IMO. Learn.com is now called Taleo. Plateau is now called SuccessFactors. LMS Demo Shop.
It is the same assumption that unless you buy one of the Big Dogs – Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, etc., There is an assumption that in order for a system to be great it has to cost over 75K. That is so wrong. . then you are not buying a great system. It is totally erroenous. .
Q: Saba, SumTotal, Cornerstone, Taleo, SuccessFactors must be the best because a lot of people buy these systems. Case in point: IMO one of the worst UI’s I have ever seen comes from Cornerstone OnDemand, which is quite popular. I wouldn’t recommend this system to anyone, okay maybe my worst enemy or someone who deserves no mercy.
I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. Big Dog (Saba, SumTotal, Plateau, Cornerstone OnDemand, Learn.com). Extended Enterprise – System must have e-comm, multi-tenet – fully skinnable, additional functionality. These standout to me. Categories.
Some vendors who have failed to deliver, in my opinion, a user friendly system, due to front end or back end (admin side), or sometimes both. CourseMill 6 by Trivantis. Plateau Talent Management System. Melon Lite LMS. Totara LMS. Meridan KSI. NetSmart University. Operitel LearnFlex. SAP’s LMS. Avilar WebMentor LMS.
If the vendor breaks past 85% you can expect to see quite a bit around workforce development in the system – all tied to learning mind you. Vendors in this category include SuccessFactors, SumTotal. If you were to place LXPs somewhere, the overwhelming majority would swing into Employee-focused.
Indeed, many traditional eLearning vendors ventured into the market though not in the volume or with the fanfare we had postulated twelve months ago. So here’s the tally for "runs batted in (or attempted)" during the 2010 mLearning season.
